President Ramaphosa to take charge of first COVID-19 vaccine shipment from India

President Cyril Ramaphosa will be receiving the first batch of vaccines from Mumbai on Monday afternoon before its transported to a cold-room for technical processing and quality assurance in Johannesburg.

Ramaphosa will be joined by Deputy President David Mabuza, Health Minister Zweli Mkhize, and the High Commissioner of India.

Healthcare workers will be first in line to receive the double jab.

The Presidency’s acting spokesperson Tyrone Seale: “The arrival of the first consignment at OR Tambo International Airport marks the start of the vaccine roll-out, which President Ramaphosa describes as the largest and most complex logistical vaccine undertaking in South Africa’s history.”

Three weeks after Health Minister Zweli Mkhize announced the procurement of COVID-19 vaccines for South Africa, the first one million doses are on their way.

The vaccine was developed by British-Swedish biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca, in collaboration with the University of Oxford.

Its emergency use was approved in December after trials showed that it was safe and up to 90% effective in preventing infection from the coronavirus.

South Africa has secured one million doses this month and 500,000 others are expected in February.

The production and distribution is being handled by the Serum Institute of India, the world’s largest vaccine producer by volume.

The AZD1222 vaccine is one of several in the market but how and when was it developed and what does it promise?

Like many scientists around the world, researchers at AstraZeneca and the University of Oxford got down to work early on in 2020 as the novel coronavirus ravaged parts of the world.

By April, after initial trials in Britain and India, developers had made headway and reported not detecting severe side effects. Weeks later, the trials were extended to South Africa, the US, and Brazil.

But there were some hiccups along the way and in September, global trials were halted when a volunteer developed a form of inflammation.

After much work and peer-reviewed results of phase three trials, the vaccine was authorized for emergency use in the UK in December.

Millions of doses have already been administered there, while some have been shipped to several countries including Morocco, Saudi Arabia, and Brazil.

AstraZeneca’s AZD1222 is a viral vector vaccine.

That means it does not contain an infectious pathogen but instead uses a harmless virus to deliver a genetic code to cells, ultimately training the immune system to react to future infections.

This mammoth task of production and distribution is being undertaken by the Serum Institute of India – the biggest vaccine manufacturer in the world.

Meanwhile in South Africa, much like elsewhere in the world, frontline workers such as nurses, doctors, and others in essential industries will be vaccinated first.

They will require two jabs, administered at least four weeks apart.

There is currently not enough data to show how long one will have immunity from the virus after the inoculations or if this specific vaccine is effective in fighting the current variant, believed to be fuelling a surge in new COVID-19 cases.

AstraZeneca’s vaccine is also cheaper than those developed by the likes of Pfizer and Moderna and does not need to be stored at ultra-cold temperatures.

Premier Mokgoro still not sure why his ANC membership temporarily suspended

North West Premier Job Mokgoro said that he still did not understand why his membership had been temporarily suspended by the African National Congress (ANC)’s interim provincial committee.

The party has confirmed Mokgoro’s suspension, along with four other members of the legislature, after they voted with the opposition.

This resulted in the ANC‘s preferred candidate losing to a Democratic Alliance (DA) nominated member.

Reports of Mokgoro’s suspension emerged on Saturday and the news was confirmed by the ANC on Sunday.

The party also announced that Mokgoro and four other members of the legislature had been referred to a disciplinary committee.

It said that their actions were in violation of the ANC’s constitution.

But the premier said that he did nothing wrong.

“They still have to explain to me how in a secret ballot they have the incredible capability to say who voted what.”

Mokgoro would not be drawn on whether he did in fact vote with the opposition.

“I was there as a deployee of the African National Congress, I voted when it was time to vote.”

Mokgoro will remain premier but his work will be regulated.

Here is the longest s.e.x in human history

A lot is often said about s.e.x and how long it should last. From stimulating quickies to longer rounds and strokes, the duration of s.e.x has always been a quality control measure.

The Guinness Book of Records has recorded a lot of s.e.x-related records globally, including the longest s.e.x ever had.

For instance, Masanobu Soto from Japan made his country proud by m@sturbating for nine hours and 58 minutes.

He beat the previous world record, which was also his, by 28 minutes.

In 1966, doctors from the Center for Marital and S.e.xual Studies in California said that a woman enjoyed 134 0rgasms over the course of an hour.

Then, the big one was in 2004 when American p0rn actress Lisa Sparks held the record for the highest frequency of s.e.x.

She won a s.e.x marathon where she poked 919 men in 24 hours.

Each s.e.xual intercourse lasted an average of 45 seconds.

Does reading the above record make us s.e.xually unfit?

Western Cape embarks on COVID-19 vaccine education drive

With COVID-19 infections have dropped significantly in the Western Cape, the main focus now is getting people vaccinated. Healthcare workers are first in line to get the jab during the first phase.

While nobody will be forced to take the vaccine, health authorities are urging all frontline health staff to get vaccinated as soon as possible.

The Western Cape’s health department has embarked on a campaign to educate people about the benefits of the vaccine.

More than 8,000 Western Cape health employees contracted COVID-19 from the first wave into the second wave. More than 900 of them had to be hospitalised. Sadly over a hundred died.

COVID-19 vaccine

Health authorities say they’re physically and emotionally fatigued and traumatised.

Western Cape Head of Health Keith Cloete said: “We need to start a process of healing and walk that process together. Within that process of healing, one area of hope is the introduction of a vaccine. ”

An important part of the Western Cape’s “Let’s unite to vaccinate” campaign is to provide scientifically sound and credible information about the COVID-19 vaccine.

Whilst we need to remember that taking the vaccine is one’s choice but what I am urging you to do is to make the right choice,” said Nomafrench Mbombi, Western Cape Health MEC.

“Not only for you to be protected but for you to protect the other person. And when it starts with us as healthcare workers it means that others will follow suit.

Health officials said people need to hear accurate information that will help them make the best choices for themselves.

Minister Lindiwe Zulu in talks to reintroduce R350 social relief of distress grant

Social Development Minister Lindiwe Zulu has told a local publication that discussions are underway to see if the government’s R350 special grant can be provided again.

The social relief of distress grant was implemented last year for unemployed citizens who were not receiving any other forms of social relief.

It expired on Sunday.

Minister Zulu said that there was a possibility that the R350 COVID-19 grant could be made available again.

“The conversations have never stopped with regards to talking to the relevant structures, to look at the budget broadly and see if we can’t do anything.”

It’s not clear where the government will get more money from but Zulu said that she hoped that the grant would return as millions of South Africans were dependent on it.

“It’s no longer an issue of ‘are you going to do it’, no we are not there anymore. We’re now at what legislation is needed for it, what financial model it’s supposed to be, how we’re going to get the money…”

Meanwhile, the South African Federation of Trade Unions’ Zwelinzima Vavi has called for the funds to be increased and distributed for another five months.

“We are calling on the government to increase it at least to R550 in the meantime while preparing to introduce the basic income grant.”

Ghana tightens restrictions as COVID-19 cases climb

Ghana has reimposed a ban on social gatherings as the number of COVID-19 cases spiral in the West African nation, the president announced.

Schools reopened in January after a 10-month closure, but President Nana Akufo-Addo said a return to stricter measures was needed.

Until further notice, funerals, weddings, concerts, theatrical performances, and parties are banned,” he said in a televised speech.

Covid-19

Justifying the restrictions, Akufo-Addo said: “Our hospitals have become full, and we have had to reactivate our isolation centres.

The new measures on social gatherings come as the average daily rates of infection is at 700, compared to 200 two weeks ago.

Land and sea borders are closed since March, while beaches, night clubs, cinemas, and pubs continue to be shut.

Economic growth is expected to plummet this year to its lowest in three decades, to 0.9 percent according to the International Monetary Fund, from 6.5 percent in 2019.

As of 31 January, Ghana had recorded 67,010 confirmed cases and 416 deaths.

Weather service warns of more heavy rainfall in Gauteng, Limpopo and Mpumalanga

The South African Weather Service (SAWS) has issued a warning of more rainfall expected in Gauteng including over the eastern parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga from Monday evening into Tuesday morning.

According to the SAWS, there is a 60% chance of showers and thundershowers over the provinces, and the heavy rainfall could result in flooding as the soil is still saturated due to the rainfall from the tropical depression Eloise.

“Orange warning for disruptive rainfall that is expected over the eastern parts of Limpopo and Mpumalanga that could result in flooded low-lying areas, isolated incidents of breaching earth dam walls, general disruption to traffic and basic services, flooding of roads and settlements (both formal and informal), dangerous driving conditions on our tarred and dead roads due to an increased number of pot-holes, as well as danger to life (particularly fast-flowing rivers and streams),” the weather service said in a statement at the weekend.

Several camps and bridges were inaccessible in the Kruger National Park due to continued heavy rainfall in the Limpopo area.

On Saturday, the park reported flooding from the Limpopo River, so much so that a ranger had to rescue an employee in Pafuri north of the park.

The Limpopo River’s high levels meant water reached Crook’s Corner early on Saturday morning. Luckily, the flow subsided substantially afterwards.

South African National Parks (SANParks) spokesperson Isaac Phaahla said the swollen rivers caught the Kruger Park in the middle of assessing damages due to tropical storm Eloise last week, making the situation slightly difficult.

However, Phaahla said rivers are subsiding slightly from the high levels shown on Sunday morning. He said that as an extra precaution, all gravel roads have been closed.

ANC wants beach protest organisers arrested and charged

Western Cape Premier Alan Winde has defended protesters calling for beaches to be reopened in the province.

He said the ban was costing the Western Cape in excess of R100 million a month.

Winde was speaking amid calls from the ANC in the Western Cape for provincial police commissioner Lieutenant-General Yolisa Matakata to order an investigation.

The ANC wants the police to arrest and charge the organizers of Saturday’s “deliberate” breaking of lockdown regulations on some beaches in the province.

The call comes in the wake of a protest at Muizenberg beach, where about 500 people descended to protest against Level 3 lockdown regulations with regard to the beach ban.

The protesters threatened to continue with their protest until the beach ban was lifted.

Winde said the Western Cape government-supported calls for the lifting of the “nonsensical” beach ban.

“The Western Cape government does not support the ban on beaches and other open, outdoor spaces, and I have consistently argued against it at every opportunity. It is not based on good scientific advice as outdoor areas with good ventilation are safer.

“I will again argue strongly for this ban to be lifted urgently at today’s President’s Coordinating Council meeting,” said Winde.

Winde added: “It is estimated that this beach ban is costing the Western Cape in excess of R100 million every month, and it will destroy jobs at a time when we desperately need to be creating them.

“I am also concerned that continuing with a ban that is not based on science and basic common sense is eroding trust in government, at precisely a time when trust is vital for the successful rollout of vaccines.

“This is clearly demonstrated in the protests yesterday, where people feel like they have no other choice to have their voices heard. The national government should take this seriously. With that said, our government supports the rule of law, and we are opposed to any person breaking the law.

“We promise our residents that we are doing whatever we can to have this nonsensical ban removed as soon as possible.”

In a statement, the ANC said it wanted an explanation from SAPS as to why there were no officers on duty at Muizenberg on Sunday when bathers frolicked in the sea in a brazen violation of lockdown regulations.

Western Cape police spokesperson Brigadier Novela Potelwa promised to give a detailed response at a later stage.

The response will be added when received.

The ANC said it considers Saturday’s beach protests a deliberate attempt to undermine the national government’s attempt to save the economy and South Africa from the being further devastated by Covid-19.

The party in a statement released by Lerumo Kalako and Ronalda Nalumango: “The Western Cape is not a renegade province, with Cape Town as its capital: it is part of South Africa. We call on the provincial commissioner to order the arrest of the organizers and to ensure that they appear in court without delay.

“We also call on them to get the maximum penalty for breaking lockdown regulations and for inciting others to break the regulations.”

The party added that, by deliberately occupying beaches in defiance of lockdown regulations, those behind these protests created potential super-spreader events, the results of which could result in more Covid-19 cases.

“We were not entirely surprised that the DA-led City of Cape Town and the provincial government did not call on the organizers to cancel their protest.

“This silence once again exposes the DA’s hypocrisy: they are quick to jump up and down when ANC members violate the regulations, but retreat behind a collective silence when some break the regulations in the Western Cape.”

The ANC is a latest political party to weigh in on the beach protest after EFF slammed the police and City of Cape Town for “standing by” while lockdown regulations were being flouted.

City of Cape Town law enforcement spokesperson Wayne Dyason said the police were the “leading agent” during the protest, and that the City’s law enforcers had taken directions from them.

The police had said that their members carefully observed the protest and later peacefully removed the protesters.

Cell C execs paid R219 million while the company burned

Cell C’s top three executives, led by former Cell C CEO Jose dos Santos, were paid R219 million in 2017 when the company was experiencing alleged corruption and poor management decisions.

They continued to receive large bonuses in 2018 despite the fact that staff was told they would not receive bonuses because the company did not meet its targets.

The lucrative salary packages were not the only benefits to Cell C’s top brass following the recapitalisation process in August 2017.

The top four executives at Cell C were also awarded 5% of the company’s total shares issued at a “nominal fee”. Their shareholding in the operator on 30 June 2018 was as follows:
Jose Dos Santos (CEO) – 1.875%
Robert Pasley (CFO) – 1.25%
Graham Mackinnon (Chief Legal Officer) – 1.25%
Hilton Coverly (Executive of Informal Channel) – 0.625%
At the time, media reports suggested that these significant rewards were linked to the successful recapitalisation process and putting the company on a sustainable path.

Cell C

Dos Santos said in February 2018 that the strategic measures put into place to enact the company’s turnaround strategy was beginning to show improved performance.

“The recapitalisation of Cell C last year has really allowed us to create a strong foundation for the business,” he said.

Dos Santos added that they had also strengthened their top management structure and the team they had in place to take Cell C into the next few years was exceptionally skilled.

If Dos Santos and his management team did indeed save the company and grew shareholder value, the large bonuses and share allocations could be justified.

It would also make sense if big pay packages and shares were used as incentives to keep the management at the company to see the turnaround strategy through and list the company on the JSE, as was planned.

Not everyone was, however, convinced Cell C’s bigwigs earned the lavish payments and that the company was on the right path.

Many Cell C employees bemoaned the fact that the company’s executives received millions while they were not getting any bonuses.

Zwelakhe Mankazana, a director at Cell C shareholder Cellsaf, told Business Day in 2018 they felt “defrauded” by these extravagant payments to the top executives.
It is now three years after the high pay packages and share allocations to Cell C’s top executives, which is a good time to assess whether they were justified or whether the critics were right.

Executive remuneration can be evaluated through shareholder value and employee benefits, and Cell C fell short in both areas.

The company performed so poorly that its main shareholders, Blue Label Telecoms and Net1, impaired their investment in Cell C to nil. This means that a great deal of shareholder value was destroyed after Cell C’s recapitalisation in August 2017.

Cell C staff had an equally torrid time. Hundreds of employees lost their jobs and the company closed 128 retail stores.

The job cuts at the company affected many employees, including senior management, junior management, and semi-skilled staff.

As if this was not enough, it has also emerged that there was corruption at the company following the arrest of the former executive head of IT at Cell C in relation to a R64-million tender scam.

“It is alleged that during the period 2012 to 2019, he collided with a director of a contracted entity responsible for IT and network services at his workplace,” the SAPS said.

He is now facing charges of fraud and corruption, and the SAPS said the investigation is continuing and more arrests are expected.

Dos Santos’ claim of an exceptional top management team to “take Cell C into the next few years” was also misguided.

Cell C’s whole top executive team was replaced within two years of the large bonuses and share scheme.

Former Cell C CFO Tyrone Soondarjee left in May 2018, Dos Santos stepped down in February 2019, and Mackinnon and Pasley left in July 2019.

There is now a new management team which must implement a new turnaround strategy to partly fixed the damage which was done to Cell C over the past few years.

We walked into a mess – Cell C CFO
Cell C’s current chief financial officer, Zaf Mahomed, recently said the company was a mess when they took over from the previous management team.

“When Douglas [Cell C CEO Douglas Craigie Stevenson] and I got into the business two years ago, what we walked into was a mess, frankly,” he said.

“There was a lot of fixing to do. As a mobile network operator we were not profitable, we had stacks of debt on our balance sheet that needed addressing, and we had a business model which was not sustainable,” he said.

So severe were the problems at Cell C that there was a real risk of the mobile operator being shut down.

This is what sparked the current turnaround strategy, where Cell C retrenched a large part of its workforce to cut costs and cut its network infrastructure spend.

Cell C CEO Douglas Craigie Stevenson also criticized decisions made by the previous management team, like the decision to launch their own streaming service.

Cell C launched Black in November 2017 and offered subscribers video streaming, music, concert tickets, and sports betting.

Dos Santos punted the service as the future of entertainment, where you would no longer have to “wait nine months before you can watch the newest movies in South Africa”.

Craigie Stevenson said to think Cell C could compete against players like Netflix in a content play was crazy, which is why they pulled the plug on their Black streaming service.

He said although they had spent R1.5 billion on the Black platform, there was no point in throwing good money after bad.Cell C told MyBroadband its leadership team is focused on the future of the company and implementing its turnaround strategy.

The company would, however, not answer any questions regarding the bonuses paid to its executives and whether it was justified. Cell C would also not say whether Dos Santos, Pasley, Coverly, and Mackinnon are still shareholders.

SA hopeful of ending COVID-19 nightmare with first vaccine shipment on its way

The aircraft carrying the first batch of COVID-19 vaccines is making its way to South Africa.

The vaccine was developed by Swedish-British biopharmaceutical company AstraZeneca last year and produced in India by the Serum Institute.

South Africa will take delivery of 1 million doses for now and is expecting another 500,000 next month.

It’s a historic moment in the country’s fight against the coronavirus.

With nearly 1.5 million cases, South Africa has recorded more COVID-19 infections than any other country on the continent.

The more contagious variant of the virus discovered by local scientists in November has also pushed the cases up and has been detected in countries including the US and Australia.

Authorities are hoping that the 1 million, vaccines which will be first administered to healthcare workers, will save lives.

Once the vials are in the hands of health officials here, they will go through strict quality assurance and stock controls over a period of 10 to 14 days.

They will then be distributed to the country’s nine provinces.

Meanwhile, the successful tender bidder who’ll be responsible for storing the vaccines will be announced on Friday.

Late last year the Network for Genomic Surveillance in South Africa (NGS-SA) led by the KwaZulu-Natal Research Innovation and Sequencing Platform (KRISP) identified a rapidly spreading new variant of SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes COVID-19. The new variant, called 501Y.V2, raises critical questions – including whether current vaccines and treatments will still be effective.

With the support of the South African Medical Research Council and the Department of Science and Innovation, a group of leading South African virologists, immunologists, vaccinologists, infectious disease specialists and microbiologists has since formed a consortium to address specific scientific questions surrounding 501Y.V2. The knowledge they generate will be shared with policymakers and developers of vaccines, diagnostics, and treatments. The Conversation Africa asked the consortium for the latest update on their work on 501Y.V2.

What’s the science behind the search?
Viruses classically change continuously, bit by bit. A changed virus is called a “variant” of the original virus; the essential core of the virus remains the same.

Changes in the virus’s genetic code are called mutations. The new variant, called 501Y.V2, has acquired 23 mutations when compared with the original SARS-CoV-2 virus. Importantly, 20 of the mutations cause amino acids changes, and eight are located in the spike protein of SARS-CoV-2.

When the mutations or genetic changes are beneficial to the virus, they persist. The changes may allow the virus to survive better or be transmitted more efficiently.

We know that similar variants with many mutations have emerged independently in the UK and Brazil too. South Africa has a particularly good research capacity to pick up variants and teams of researchers have actively been looking. Furthermore, the NGS-SA consortium followed a tip from clinical staff at a private hospital in the Nelson Mandela Bay in the country’s Eastern Cape province. Clinicians were seeing unusually high numbers of COVID-19 cases. This possibly explains why this variant was picked up here so quickly.

Why is this variant worrying?
The concern is that 501Y.V2 may spread much more efficiently between people, compared with other variants of SARS-CoV-2.

The mutations of 501Y.V2 have included changes to a part of the virus known as the spike protein. This virus spike protein hooks onto the human cell via a “receptor” to gain entry into the cells: this is how infection starts. The virus then starts multiplying inside cells. It ultimately gets released by the cells and can go on to infect more cells.

The changes in the spike protein of 501Y.V2 are likely to enhance its binding with human cell receptors, allowing easier infection and greater replication within the host. This may result in greater amounts of virus in an infected person, who can then infect other people more easily. The ultimate result could be quicker spread among people.

Scientists have observed that 501Y.V2 has quickly become “dominant” among multiple variants that have been circulating in the South African population. This strongly suggests the new mutations of this variant offer a transmission advantage. In some regions of South Africa, more than 80% of viruses currently isolated from infected people are now 501Y.V2.

This is likely to mean that most people who are now infected have a coronavirus that is more easily transmissible.

The new variants identified in the UK and Brazil have many similar mutations and potentially similar outcomes. Research confirmed greater transmissibility in the UK.

In addition, new research from South Africa shows that 501Y.V2 may escape antibodies generated from previous infection. This means that antibodies from people who were infected with previous variants may not work as well against 501Y.V2.

The research team used blood plasma from patients who had COVID-19 in the earlier surges to see if antibodies in their blood could neutralize, or make ineffective, 501Y.V2. They found that these patients’ antibodies were less able to neutralize 501Y.V2 relative to previous COVID-19 variants in South Africa. About a six to 200-fold higher plasma concentration was needed to neutralize 501Y.V2 in a lab setting.

Meanwhile, research from a different group in South Africa comes to similar conclusions. The team tested the antibody response from blood plasma samples from 44 people who had a prior infection with earlier variants of COVID-19. They found nearly half of the plasmas tested could not neutralize 501Y.V2 – in a lab setting.

This data is a cause for concern. But more work needs to be done before we can categorically say what this means for people’s immunity against 501Y.V2, as well as the implications for vaccines designed for the earlier variants. This is because our immune response to infection and to vaccines involve components beyond just antibodies.

Does this variant cause different symptoms or more severe disease?
This is a topic of ongoing research. So far, clinicians and scientists working in the frontline have not observed any differences in symptoms in people infected with the new variant, compared with people infected by other variants. It, therefore, does not appear that the virus will make people more ill, or lead to more deaths.

At this stage, it also appears that the new variant causes a similar spectrum of disease – older people, men, and people with certain other medical conditions do worse.

The clinical management remains exactly the same: oxygen therapy when people need it, steroids (like dexamethasone) for people with more severe disease, and blood-thinning medication to prevent blood clots, a common complication of COVID-19. The main therapy that has been proven to reduce deaths is dexamethasone, which targets the overactive immune response to the virus, not the virus itself.

Are current vaccines likely to protect against the new variant?
Research is underway. Until shown to be otherwise, it is reasonable to expect vaccines to be effective against this variant as has been shown in clinical trials to date.

Vaccines protect us by causing an immune response against the spike protein of the virus. The vaccines present the spike protein to the immune system, which recognizes it as foreign – an invader – and make an immune response to the protein. When the body later encounters the actual virus, the immune response is ready to recognize and destroy it before it causes illness.

Part of the immune response is the generation of antibodies. Antibodies bind to the virus, making it non-infectious. We know that some parts of the spike proteins in the new variant have changed and so the antibodies created by the vaccines may not recognize them as well as before. But it’s likely that the vaccine-induced antibodies will also recognize other parts of this target spike protection. In addition, other arms of the immune response induced by vaccines, such as the T cell response, also important in controlling viruses, could also compensate.

The ongoing research falls into two categories:

First, blood from people who have received COVID-19 vaccines is used to see whether the antibodies in this blood, induced by the vaccine, can neutralize the virus in a test tube. If they do, the vaccine is still likely to work as well against 501Y.V2 as against other variants.

Second, researchers are studying which variants were present in people who took part in vaccine trials and still developed COVID-19 disease. If more 501Y.V2 is identified compared with other variants, it is likely that the vaccine does not work as well against 501Y.V2.

Latest: Government discussing the lift of alcohol ban

Lifting the prohibition on alcohol sales have been mooted in several government meetings this past week.

The National Coronavirus Command Council (NCCC) met on Wednesday.

On Saturday at a meeting of Nedlac – which brings together government, business, and labour – there was a discussion about the alcohol ban and that there needs to be a resolution on the matter, considering the financial impact of the ban.

Nedlac can’t make a decision on the matter.

Then, on Sunday, the Presidential Coordinating Council (PCC) met.

A local publication understands that Health Minister Zweli Mkhize’s presentation to this meeting indicated that the rate of infection is slowing.

Subsequently, the relaxation of some regulations was discussed, including the lifting of the booze ban.

A change in the regulations must first be approved by Cabinet.

Cabinet is due to meet on Wednesday. Its previous meeting was on 19 January and Cabinet usually meets every second Wednesday.

The Presidency is still holding its cards close to the chest as to when President Cyril Ramaphosa will again address the nation.

“The Presidency will make the necessary announcements as and when the president is due to address the nation,” said Ramaphosa’s acting spokesperson Tyrone Seale.

A local publication understands the discussion is about lifting the alcohol ban before 15 February.

The state of disaster will have to be extended on 15 February.

The ban was implemented to ease the strain on South Africa’s health services as a second wave of infections engulfed the country towards the end of last year.

“Health Services in several parts of the country have reported that the prohibition of alcohol sales had significantly reduced the amount of trauma cases seen in our hospitals over the New Year period,” Ramaphosa said in his last national address on 11 January, when he announced that the alcohol ban would remain in place.

However, there has also been a significant economic impact, with the liquor and hospitality industry complaining the ban has been calamitous.

South African Breweries (SAB) has cancelled R5 billion’s worth of investments in the country since the prohibition was first instituted and recently suspended the contracts of 550 temporary workers indefinitely.

Doctor provides free medical care to Covid-19 patients in Chatsworth

A Chatsworth doctor is selflessly serving the community by providing free medical care to Covid-19 positive patients.

Dr Diveshni Govender has set up a makeshift clinic at the Havenside Community Hall in Chatsworth.

Following the overwhelming need for hospital care for patients and Chatsworth being a hotspot, Govender came up with the idea of offering some sort of day facility offering interim care.

“On a daily basis I was receiving phone calls for a hospital bed or a drip or oxygen. A number of people in the community cannot afford medical treatment and could not get a bed at a hospital. I consulted a colleague who supplies me with personal protective equipment to assist in sourcing items.

“It isn’t ideal medicine but we are now practicing pandemic medicine. I approached members of the community centre who allowed me to use the hall,” said Govender.

Seventy-two hours after a call was made for a range of medical items from alcohol swabs, IV infusion sets, Covid vitamin packs, to non-medical items such as sanitizers, mops, brooms, the facility was set up with 15 beds.

Govender, with two nurses, an admin clerk, and a cleaner are running the clinic from Monday to Friday.

“It is run purely on donations. A business sponsors meals so patients can go home with lunch after treatment in the morning,” she said.

To access the facility a person needs to have a positive Covid-19 test result, have difficulty breathing, have an oxygen saturation of 85% to 92%, and have difficulty tolerating oral fluids.

“Patients receive IV treatment, oxygen therapy, take away home treatment which is Covid vitamins and antibiotics or steriods if they need it, crystals if they need to steam.

“I am seeing anyone whether they have medical aid or not. Those that are not well enough I ask them to come back for a second dose of treatment or refer them for hospital care. Those that are not quite at a hospital stage and are also not comfortable being at home I send them home with an oxygen concentrator at my discretion, trusting they would bring it back so I can treat other people,” said Govender, who has a general practice in Havenside.

She said people are receiving proper treatment like they would at a private healthcare facility.

Govender said they can see up to 30 patients a day, but on a average day they see about 15 to 20.

“As word spreads we are starting to see more people. The burden of disease is there. People are scared to go to the hospital,” said Govender.

She said it was just about the community coming together and serving the community, and not about any monetary gain.

Premier Job Mokgoro says serving North West residents remains his priority

North West Premier Job Mokgoro has been slapped with suspension for allegedly defying the ANC in the election of the chair of chairs in the provincial legislature. But the premier said he hasn’t received any such notice.

Mokgoro and other members are accused of siding with the opposition in the recent election.

“Unfortunately, the suspension I know is through the media no one has spoken to me from IPC,” he said.

“Let me state categorically I am committed to the values of the ANC and if the leadership take the decision to suspend me, I will humbly abide. The premier says serving the province’s four million people remains his priority.

Job Mokgoro

The ANC in the North West is facing several challenges like factionalism and poor service delivery. In 2018, its provincial executive committee was disbanded.

North West ANC Interim Provincial Committee coordinator Hlomane Chauke said: “Here we’re dealing with members of the ANC, not as the premier, but as member in line with the constitution a member that’s been found wanting.

“We have referred the five to the DC in terms of the constitution of the ANC, they voted against the party mandate.
There are certain areas he will work with collective at the exco and look at the issue, the individual membership is suspended without interfering with his constitutional powers.

ANC WC slam police for treating protests according to race after CT beach protests

The ANC in the Western Cape committed to fighting racial profiling and differential policing following law enforcement’s response to Saturday’s beach protests.

Hundreds of residents along the False Bay coastline, Camps Bay, and Plettenberg Bay flocked to the shores in defiance of the imposed beach ban.

They said with COVID-19 cases declining in the province, the shores should be reopened to the public.

The government closed beaches to prevent the spread of COVID-19 under alert level 3 lockdown.

The City of Cape Town said while it supports the demonstrations, it called on residents to be mindful of the regulations.

No arrests were made during the act of civil disobedience.

The ANC’s Cameron Dugmore said officials seem to apply different standards when responding to demonstrations in the country.

“There appears to be different standards. If mainly black people protest for land there’s a response from the city and law enforcement but in this case where white people were protesting, a different standard seems to apply.”
