The National Education, Health and Allied Workers’ Union says it is now or never for community health workers to be recognised.
The unions announced a nationwide strike to intensify the call on the government to employ workers permanently.
It briefed media on its plans to paint all provinces red on Thursday. It is a battle that will play out on the picket lines.
This issue is not a new one. In 2016, community health workers in Gauteng succeeded in becoming employees of the health department. Nehawu is also opposing government’s salary freeze.
Health union Nehawu is crying foul over the lack of support for healthcare workers during the #COVID19 battle. The union held a briefing earlier to highlight its concerns. @LindokuhlXulu1 talks to Nehawu President Mzwandile Makwayiba #eNCA Courtesy #DStv403 pic.twitter.com/pEeSYH9xIz

Asked about this, Nehawu called on the provincial government to prioritise hospitals.
Nehawu says demonstrations on Thursday will not disturb critical operations in the health sector.
