Its never too late – Zoleka Mandela is ready to start over

Zoleka Mandela is ready to “start over” and recently moved into a new home this week with her kids.

The author and motivational speaker announced in March that she and her partner had split, saying it had taken her two years to leave a relationship, which she claims had eroded her self-esteem, independence, and her mental and emotional state.

Zoleka Mandela

Now that the nationwide lockdown has eased a little, people are able to move houses, and Zoleka took to Instagram to show off her new place.

She shared a quote from Richard Branson, reading: “Do not be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again.

Zoleka Mandela

She said that it would be easier to give up, but she was determined to not allow failure to hold her back.

“Here’s to having strength to start over again, even at the age of 40. Here’s to having courage not to allow failure to hold me back, even when it’s always easier to give up!

“Here’s to a place, I can finally call my own!” she wrote.
In her post announcing their split, Zoleka admitted that walking away from the relationship felt like it was “unhinging” her whole life, but it was necessary for self-discovery and inner peace.

Zoleka Mandela

“Leaving someone you once loved, for eight long years feels like it completely unhinges your entire life until you realise that it’s sparked self discovery, inner peace and has set you on a path of self-love.

Defence minister – Investigation still ongoing on Collins Khosa case

Speaking before the national council of provinces on Tuesday, the minister assured the council that the case was still receiving attention.

Minister of Defence and Military Veterans, Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula says several law enforcement entities has made the case of Collins Khosa’s death their top priority and assured that the case was still receiving attention.

Khosa was allegedly beaten to death by members of the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) when they saw half a glass of alcohol in his yard in Alexandra.

According to his family, Khosa died later in hospital after he was choked and beaten, slammed against the wall, and hit with the butt of a machine gun.

Speaking before the national council of provinces (NCOP) to field oral questions on Tuesday, the minister assured the council that the case was still receiving attention.

“I am singling out the Collins Khosa case in particular because it is a matter of interest right now in South Africa and it is a matter which relates to the death of a human being and therefore, it is necessary for me to indicate to honourable members and to South Africans that because at some point we said the board of inquiry has completed its work and that does not mean this case is not receiving attention.

“This case is receiving attention from three different entities, which is namely your SANDF board of inquiry, your military ombudsman and the last one, which is the joint investigation conducted by the military police and the South African Police Service (SAPS),” she said.

Mapisa-Nqakula was responding to a question on whether the government has taken responsibility on the reported incidents where SANDF officers had been accused of alleged acts of brutality against civilians.

She said the government had expressed empathy with the families suffering the consequences of brutality against civilians, and in particular, the Khosa family, for what happened to them.

“Obviously I am the executive in the department and anything that happens to members of our society, anything that happens to that structure, you get ashamed, you get embarrassed.

“And I must say that when the allegations emerged, I am on record of having made a statement to the effect that we do not accept instances where law enforcement agencies abuse power.

“Even when the matter of the Khosa case, even though there hasn’t been an investigation that gives us a finding as to who should be accountable for this case, I am still on record as having said, on behalf of the South African government, we have our hands in shame for what has happened, for the loss of life.

“I don’t think an impression should be created that we do not take responsibility, we take responsibility. We make these statements because we do take responsibility for whatever action – whether good or bad.”

Last month, the Pretoria High Court ordered the suspension of SANDF members and Johannesburg Metro Police Department (JMPD) officers who were involved in the fatal beating of Khosa, pending an investigation. The Democratic Alliance (DA) welcomed the high court ruling.

The judge overseeing the case, Hans Fabricius, had ruled that every individual within South Africa’s borders was entitled to the right to human dignity, the right to life and the right not to be tortured.

Fabricius said it could be beneficial to grant an order instructing law enforcement to act within the confines of the Constitution during the lockdown.

SA Zionist Federation defends Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng

The SA Zionist Federation has come out in defence of Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng after being heavily criticised for his pro-Israel comments.

The federation also condemned the ANC and others for what it described as an unwarranted attack on Mogoeng for expressing his biblical connection to Israel.

“The Chief Justice’s heartfelt sentiment exposed the boundaries of the ANC’s support for the constitutional right of freedom of religion, thought and opinion,” the SAZF said in a statement on Tuesday.

According to the SAZF, the ANC pays lip-service to the notion of a negotiated and peaceful resolution to the conflict between the Palestinians and Israel.

It said Mogoeng should never be silenced by intimidatory exploits and that the governing party must distance itself from such conduct and give meaning to promoting peace rather than hatred in the middle east and South Africa.

Mogoeng told a webinar organised by Israeli newspaper The Jerusalem Post last week that he was under an obligation as a Christian to love Israel and pray for Jerusalem’s peace, which means that country’s peace.

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng
If I curse Abraham and Israel the almighty God will curse me too. I cannot do anything, as a Christian, other than love and pray for Israel because I know hatred for Israel by me and for my nation can only attract unprecedented curses” he said.

Mogoeng’s comments were widely condemned, with the ANC calling for National Assembly speaker Thandi Modise to talk to the country’s top judge. A complaint has also been laid with the Judicial Services Commission, which Mogoeng chairs.

Durban hospitals slam fake news saying they are closed due to Covid-19

Two Durban hospitals have slammed reports claiming they have shut down and will not be taking on any new patients due to a spread in Covid-19 cases.

On Tuesday, a WhatsApp message was shared among community groups, claiming Netcare’s St Augustine’s Hospital had shut after six doctors contracted the coronavirus from patients and had infected six nurses.

The message goes on to say that patients from the hospital have been transferred to the Life Entabeni, Netcare Parklands and Life Westville hospitals. According to Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital general manager, Heinrich Venter, the message is a hoax. The hoax message that has circulated on social media

COVID-19

“There is no truth whatsoever that Netcare St Augustine’s Hospital will be closing down today and that patients will be transferred to other hospitals, or that any doctors at the hospital has tested positive for Covid-19. The message which seems to currently be circulating on WhatApp is fake and highly irresponsible,” he said.

“It is, in fact, a criminal offence to spread such fake news which causes totally unnecessary concern and anxiety amongst the public and the loved ones of patients currently being cared for in our hospital,” Venter added.

Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital’s Ebrahim Asmal said they were aware of the post and confirmed it was not true.

“This is fake news and has been reported to the relevant authorities. Ahmed Al-Kadi Private Hospital is prepared to treat any suspected cases of Covid-19 according to the National Institute of Communicable Diseases protocol,” he said.

Asmal said any confirmed cases were being treated using relevant procedures implemented under the NICD, Department of Health and World Haalth Organization’s guidance of the infection prevention and control strategies. He said the hospital and its emergency units remained opened.

Anti-GBV protesters dispersed by rubber bullets – Pictures

Women in Zandspruit outside Johannesburg took to the streets to protest GBV and the lack of opportunities, leading to a heavy-handed response from police.

Police fired rubber bullets at a group of women protesting against gender-based violence in Zandspruit, west of Johannesburg on Tuesday morning.

Anti-GBV protesters

Over 200 protesting women had closed off parts of Beyers Naude drive with burning tyres and other debris, which resulted in the intervention from police.

The women-only protest was organized by the women of Zandspruit to address issues of GBV, land invasions, as well as not having their own land to develop businesses for their families in the community. The protesters claim there were no opportunities in the area for women.

Anti-GBV protesters

Agnes Mashego said the men in the area have not succeeded in helping them in any way, but instead beat, raped, and even murdered women regularly.

Anti-GBV protesters

They say they fear for their lives as well as those of their children, and without the mentioned resources they are unable to work for themselves, leaving them reliant on men to support them financially.

Anti-GBV protesters

Xolile Nxumalo another protestor, said three-month-old children were being raped and she was tired of the men getting away with murder.

“I want to be able to earn my own money so I can own my own house, a place where we can be safe and not live with these men that beat us and try to murder us. We don’t want men at this protest.

“Now the police are shooting at us, men, again hurting us, when all we want is to be heard and to feel safe again.”

COVID-19: SANDF medical teams to be deployed to Eastern Cape

Medical teams from the South African National Defence Force will be deployed to the Eastern Cape to help as the province’s health facilities are being overrun by COVID-19 cases.

The Eastern Cape has had more than 26,000 confirmed infections and close to 400 deaths.

Premier Oscar Mabuyane also addressed the dumping of used COVID-19 test kits along the side of the N2 highway. He said he wants answers.

“Government of the Eastern Cape has been on a negative, unfortunately, on something we were almost clueless about, because it was from a small lab in a hospital, to the bigger lab for processing of specimen,” he said.

SANDF

Mabuyane is urging residents to stay at home as the coronavirus pandemic is expected to reach its peak in the province in the coming days.

It is the education system that’s the real worry, with at least three pupils dying from the virus.

More than 1,500 people in the Eastern Cape’s education system have been infected with COVID-19 and the number of deaths is creeping up. At least three pupils and eight teachers have died.

Eastern Cape Education MEC Fundile Gade said, “in terms of the unconfirmed statistics of the Department of Health to us, it’s 25 but the confirmed ones it’s 15. Out of that 15, we have got learners that are three, we have got four that are non-teaching staff and eight that are teachers.”

Gade said the province proposes that the reopening of schooling for other grades be delayed.

The MEC believes the reopening of schools should depend on the impact of and rise in infections. Coronavirus Hotline Number: 0800 029 999 from 8 am to 4 pm, Monday to Friday

Bishop Bavin staff members take school to court

The group is made up of administration staff, teachers, and catering and ground staff, who demand they either be reinstated or compensated for their abrupt dismissal.

A group of 102 staff and teachers at Bishop Bavin private school in Johannesburg, who were dismissed when the school suddenly announced its closure earlier this month, are taking the school to the Labour Court.

They say the school’s decision to close is “unlawful and unfair in the extreme”.

The group, represented by advocate Leslie Sedibe, is made up of administration staff, teachers, and catering and ground staff. They are demanding they either be reinstated or compensated for their abrupt dismissal.

They were left in the cold after Bishop Bavin closed its doors due to financial issues earlier this month.

In court papers filed at the Johannesburg Labour Court, Odette Jones, a former employee at Bishop Bavin, said the school terminated the staff’s contracts without the required notice and without following the Labour Relations Act, leaving them without benefits.

“I have been advised that the school’s approach in terminating the applicants’ contracts of employment is, in the circumstances, legally indefensible.

“More importantly, there has been no compliance, at all, by the school with sections […] of the [Labour Relations Act] LRA, prior to the termination by the school of the applicants’ contracts of employments,” Jones said.

They are demanding that the school reinstate their employment until it complies with the fair procedure laid out in the law.

Alternatively, they demand that the school compensate them in a manner determined by the court.

This demand was put to the school before the staff members went to court.

However, according to the papers, the school “ignored” them and “did not even see fit to respond to the letter containing the demand”.

Left in the cold

In court papers, the staff emphasised the impact the school’s decision to close had on parents and learners.

“[W]e wish to place on record that we have been approached by a significant number of parents on behalf of the children who are learners at the school, who have similarly expressed their deep hurt by the callous manner in which the decision was taken by the Board and the impact of such a decision on the rights of the children under the Constitution of the Republic of South Africa.”

They said they were consulting with parents and children “who feel violated”, and will give directions on a plan of action to represent their interests following the meeting.

Insolvency

In a letter to staff, the executive head of the school, Roger Cameron, explains that the school’s board took a “unanimous resolution” to dissolve the business of the school, effective from 10 June 2020.

A week later, the school placed the management and closure of the school in the hands of liquidators, who would “wind-up the business in terms of the Insolvency Act”.

Cameron added that contracts were terminated from 11 June and employees will not receive benefits, except for the provision of temporary accommodation for those already living on the property.

Leroy Sane set to join Bayern Munich

Manchester City’s Leroy Sane set to join Bayern Munich. The Germany international will join the Bundesliga champions for an initial fee of about £44.7m, with add-ons which could increase it by more than £10m. Manchester City has agreed to sell winger Leroy Sane to Bayern Munich in a deal that could earn them £54.8m.

Sane, 24, joined City from Schalke in 2016 for £37m and has claimed two Premier League titles with the club. He was a key part of the team that won a domestic treble last year, but has been injured for much of this season.

City manager Pep Guardiola said last week that Sane, whose present deal was due to expire at the end of next season, had refused the offer of a new contract and wanted to leave.

It is understood City were unwilling to get close to the estimated £20m annual salary Sane will receive from Bayern. City has negotiated a 10% sell-on clause, with the fee representing their largest-ever outgoing transfer deal. The player is now set to travel to Germany in the next 24 hours to complete the transfer.

Although he cannot play for Bayern in the Champions League this season, it is understood he will not return to City and has played his final game for the club.

The Premier League club did have the option of keeping him for the final year of his contract, they felt it would have been counter-productive under the circumstances.

Quite apart from the player’s desire to leave, and potentially do so for nothing in 12 months’ time, Sane is yet to prove his fitness after suffering a major knee injury during the Community Shield in August.

City also believe they have are plenty of strength in wide positions, with Phil Foden, Riyad Mahrez, Bernardo Silva and Raheem Sterling all options. Sane has been in the matchday squad for all four City games since the season resumed earlier this month.

However, his only appearance was for 11 minutes as a substitute in the 5-0 win against Burnley last Monday. Sane departs the Etihad having made 192 appearances for City, scoring 52 goals.

Lionel Messi scores his 700th goal

Lionel Messi scores 700th goal as Barcelona play a 2 all draw with Atletico Madrid. The Spanish giants’ all-time top scorer hit the landmark goal for club and country by gently chipping the ball into the net as Jan Oblak dived the wrong way. Lionel Messi scored the 700th goal of his career with a Panenka penalty in Barcelona’s La Liga draw with Atletico Madrid on Tuesday.

The goal had put Barcelona 2-1 up but Atletico hit back to draw 2-2. Barca remains second, one point behind Real Madrid, who have a game in hand. Messi’s penalty was also his 630th goal in his 724th appearance for the club.

The Argentina star played a part in the opener for Barcelona when his whipped corner hit Diego Costa and deflected into the back of the net. Former Chelsea striker Costa quickly had the chance to make amends when Atletico were awarded a penalty after Yannick Carrasco was fouled inside the box.

Costa stepped up to take the spot-kick only to see it saved by Marc-Andre ter Stegen, but it had to be retaken because the Barcelona goalkeeper had come off his line early. Saul Niguez took the second penalty and sent Ter Stegen the wrong way.

Messi restored Barcelona’s lead and reached his career milestone with his cheeky Panenka – named after Antonin Panenka’s famous penalty for Czechoslovakia in the final of the 1976 European Championship – but Niguez equalised again with another penalty as Barca dropped points which could cost them dear in the title race.

Messi joins 700 club
Another year, another milestone for Messi.

His 700th career goal – coming just over 14 months after netting for the 600th time for Barcelona – means he joins a select group.

According to data from Rec.Sport.Soccer Statistics Foundation, Messi is now one of seven players to have reached the 700-goal mark in their career.

Czech-Austrian Josef Bican leads the way with 805 career goals, followed by Brazil legend Romario, who bagged 772, with his compatriot Pele third on 767.

Hungary legend Ferenc Puskas hit 746 goals, while former Germany striker Gerd Muller rounds out the top five with 735 goals. Messi’s great modern goalscoring rival, Cristiano Ronaldo, is the sixth man on the list, having reached 700 career goals with a strike for Portugal in a Euro 2020 qualifier against Ukraine in October last year. He has added a further 26 goals to his tally since then.

How has he scored his 700 goals?

The majority of his goals have come from his left foot – 582 of them – with 92 coming courtesy of his right. Not the biggest of players, nor one who has operated in a side reliant on crosses into the box, only 24 of his 700 goals have come from a header.

Clinical from a dead ball, Messi has also scored 52 direct free-kicks and 90 penalties. Most come from efforts inside the box (580), with 120 from outside the penalty area.
