Sthembiso Khoza talks about his life as an actor, fatherhood and his new acting gig on Housekeepers

Just weeks after it emerged that actor SK Khoza was returning to The Queen, it’s also been revealed that he bagged a spot on Housekeepers. And, when he’s not in front of the camera, SK is busy being a dad to two beautiful daughters.

During an interview with TshisaLIVE, SK took a trip down memory lane to reflect on how the acting bug bit.

“How I got into acting is a funny story actually. I was going to Three Talk with Noeleen for an interview with Bonang.

“When I was at reception Portia Gumede, who was the writer of the first telenovela in SA done by Urban Brew, called Inkaba, found me at reception and asked me whether I was coming to audition for the character called DJ T-Man and I said no.

SK Khoza

“She asked me if I had time and I said yes. I did a screen test, I had never acted before but I got the job on the spot. Initially it was three calls but as the show carried on … I guess I did great enough for my character to have ended up being a part of the story right until the end.”

SK added that his first TV gig was being a presenter on Mzansi Rides, through which he managed to get his advanced driver’s licence.

However, SK’s come a long way from Mzansi Rides and Inkaba, and is determined to leave a lasting legacy across the continent.

SK explained that he hopes to one day act in an action-packed, fast cars, type of movie as he had training in martial arts.

When SK is not taking the acting world by storm, he’s at home raising his daughters.

SK Khoza’s daughters

“I no longer live for me, I live for them … I have to defend, protect and provide for them.

“My hopes and dreams for my daughters are pretty simple, I’d love for them to be happy, to love me unconditionally and, most importantly, to trust me enough to be able to open up about a lot of things.”

Though he couldn’t say much about his new role on Housekeepers, he shared how excited he was to have bagged another acting gig.

Religious community gear up for opening under Level 3 Lockdown

As the religious community gears up to reopen in Level 3, some institutions want more time to prepare. Others say they’re ready to hold services, albeit under very strict conditions. Then there are those adapting to new ways of worship. Word and Spirit Bible Church pastor, Manqoba Masilela said as much as he appreciates that places of worship can reopen next week, he says he will give it a miss and for now — he prefers preaching online.

Masilela said, “we have been challenged to go down, look at different technicalities in terms of adhering to protect the citizens and it’s been an interesting one as much as we welcome we will need more time to look at our capabilities and comply.”

Other churches will reopen guided by strict conditions. Grace Bible Church Bishop Mosa Sono said they will open only for pastors, bishops, and overseers. We have been in discussion on our state of readiness,” Sono said. We are starting [Monday] tomorrow to deep clean and have put together a document and who is eligible to come, people of certain age people who are vulnerable and ensure people fill out a questionnaire. Some places of worship want more time to prepare. Senior pastor from Endumisweni Covenant Church Sakhele Makhubo said they have decided not to open their churches yet.

Cyril Ramaphosa

We need a lot of preparation and pandemic is very high in Gauteng and we must comply,” he said. The Muslim community is also gearing up for the big week. Houghton Masjid cleric Qari Yusuf Osman said he is looking forward to seeing worshippers. We need to be timeous and follow the regulations that our volunteers will be busy with for the time ahead,” Osman said. Masjid trustee Waseem Koor said, “we have taken protocols to abide by government and it’s an important institution, we feel we have the responsibility for re-opening.”

Religious leaders have made a commitment to comply with all key health protocols, but the big test will be once they start receiving worshippers. Western Cape schools reopen on 1 June despite Motshekga’s late turnaround

The Western Cape Education Department (WCED) says that schools in the province will be ready and open to welcome learners on Monday 1 June in accordance with national government’s original directive.

The notice, issued by the MEC for Education in the Western Cape, Debbie Schäfer, has added further complexities to an already-convoluted back to school plan. Despite Basic Education Minister Angie Motshekga’s late-night turnaround, which effectively postponed the reopening of classrooms to Grade 7 and 12 learners to Monday 8 June, Schäfer argued that gazetted regulations, coupled with the Western Cape’s state of readiness, meant that schools in the province would open on Monday 1 June.

BACK TO SCHOOL SHAMBLES
The lack of clarity and consecutive delays associated with Motshekga’s back to school plans has left teachers, pupils and parents in a quandary. The minister was initially due to clarify the school strategy in the eleventh hour on Sunday night but cancelled the media briefing at the last-minute and, instead, issued a statement via the department.

Motshekga, who has since rescheduled her media briefing to 11:00 on Monday, said that after consultations with the Council of Education Ministers (CEM) and several key stakeholders in the education sector, it was determined that the national state of readiness was behind track. Due to this delay, the department noted:

“The date on which Grade 7 and 12 learners have to report back to school is 8 June 2020.”

This swift turnaround comes after civil societies and organisations, including the South African Human Rights Commission (SAHRC), threatened legal action against the department of basic education. Motshekga’s opponents argue that sending children back to school, amid the growing wave of coronavirus infections and the looming winter months, would be a public health disaster.

WESTERN CAPE SCHOOLS OPEN ON MONDAY 1 JUNE
Schäfer, however, argues that Western Cape schools were primed in line with government’s health and safety directives and should, therefore, be allowed to reopen to Grade 7 and 12 Pupils. In a statement issued on Sunday night, the WCED said:

Debbie-Schafer

“In accordance with the Gazette promulgated last week by Minister Motshekga, schools are to return on 1 June 2020.
We have been engaged in discussions at a national level over the weekend, and were awaiting the Minister’s announcement that was scheduled for 18h00 this evening. Given that this has now been postponed until tomorrow, we can no longer allow our schools to hover in a state of uncertainty.
Following the national minister’s earlier announcements, we have pulled out all the stops as a province to ensure that we are ready for the arrival of learners tomorrow.
Principals and staff have worked tirelessly to get all the health and safety requirements in place.”

Schäfer detailed the province’s state of readiness, adding that R280 million had been used to procure personal protective equipment (PPE) and cleaning materials. This includes the provision of 2.4 million face masks, 7 000 non-contact digital thermometers, and millions of litres of hand sanitiser, liquid soap, disinfectant and bleach.

HEALTH AND SAFETY CONCERNS
Schäfer did, however, add that not all schools in the province would reopen on Monday 1 June, saying:

“There will also be some schools that do not receive learners tomorrow, either because they are not at a suitable state of readiness in terms of safety protocols, or they are closed for cleaning if there has been a confirmed case of Covid-19 at the school. These schools will communicate with their staff members and parents of learners in this regard.”

The WCED said that while it understood the anxieties and concerns associated with going back to school after a prolonged period of absence — and, amid a growing pandemic — the right to education could no longer be scuppered. Schäfer explained:

“Whilst we are aware of the many anxieties surrounding COVID-19, keeping schools closed indefinitely is not going to resolve them.
The South African Paediatric Association has come out in favour of the phased re-opening. We are taking every precaution, but the longer schools remain closed, the poor will suffer the most.
The disingenuous arguments by some that all schools should open simultaneously do not hold water. They argue that the poor will be left behind. Well, the reality is that the poor are being left behind now, as wealthier schools or parents have the means to continue online.”

The Western Cape is regarded as the epicentre of the COVID-19 outbreak in South Africa, accounting for 65% of all infections in the country. More than 500 Western Cape residents have lost their lives due to the virus.

Level 3 lockdown – These are the regulations that apply from June 1

As South Africa prepares for the relaxation of lockdown restrictions, the government’s Coronavirus Command Council has clarified the new regulations which will govern the lives of citizens from June 1.

While the curfew which at Level 4 restricted people to their homes between 8 pm at night and 5 am in the morning has been lifted, a number of restrictions on movement remain in place.

Movement of people

People may only leave their homes for work, to procure groceries and essential services, exercise or perform any of the other activities permitted under Level 3.

Visiting with family and friends, exercising in groups and attending large gatherings is still forbidden.

You may move house, but you will need a permit from the relevant authority.

All those above the age of 60, and those with underlying medical conditions, should leave home only in exceptional circumstances.

Domestic workers and private carers

All domestic workers and other care workers employed in private households may return to work, as long as their employer ensures that adequate safety measures are in place.

The employer is also required to issue them with a permit.

Traders will be permitted to sell alcohol for consumption off-site and the consumption of alcohol at the place of sale is prohibited.

Only funerals and religious gatherings are permitted and these are capped at 50 persons, depending on the size of the place of worship.

All health protocols and social distancing measures must be adhered to as provided for directions that have been issued by the Minister of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs.

Hotspot areas

In the coronavirus hotspots announced by President Cyril Ramaphosa, the Justice Cluster will conduct patrols, roadblocks, and vehicle checkpoints.

The South African Police, SANDF and local law enforcement authorities will work together to control movement in these areas.

Transport

The hours of operation of minibus, metred and e-hailing taxi operators will no longer be limited.

Commuters will have to wait another month before Metrorail begins operating again. However, the Gautrain, which resumed operations at the beginning of May, will resume the airport service on June 1.

Public transport operators offering long-distance services will be allowed to operate, provided that they only carry passengers permitted to travel between provinces under the Disaster Management regulations.

President Ramaphosa: I should’ve announced the re-banning of cigarettes

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he should have been the one to announce the re-banning of the sale of tobacco products. In communicating that the country would move to alert level four of the lockdown, Ramaphosa initially announced that the ban on cigarettes would be lifted.

However, government made an about-turn and said the ban would remain. The decision was then communicated by Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini-Zuma. Ramaphosa has admitted that the communication was confusing. He says government went back to the drawing board after a flurry of objections to the risk of smoking were raised by thousands of South Africans.

“What we should have done is that with the president having announced it, the president should have been the one to announce it again and give reasons as to why this has been changed,” Ramaphosa said. The president concedes that communication from government to the public needs to be clearer.

Lockdown level 3: You will not be allowed to stockpile liquor

As liquor outlets open their doors on Monday following a nine-week ban on the sale of alcohol, industry captains including tavern owners have warned that stockpiling of beverages will not be allowed.

Beer Association of South Africa (Basa), Consumer Goods Council of SA (CGCSA), Consortium of Liquor Traders Associations (LTA), Liquor Traders Association of SA (LTASA), South African Liquor Brand owners Association (Salba) and VinPro (representing wine industry) have made it clear to consumers that they do not want a repeat of the chaos that ensued when President Cyril Ramaphosa initially announced the lockdown in March.
Droves of people stockpiled on essential goods, leaving shelves empty.

Speaking on behalf of traders and associations, Basa chief executive Patricia Pillay confirmed that no bulk-buying would be permitted. She said all industry players had compiled their own guidelines on sales and sent them to Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Minister Nkosazana Dlamini Zuma.

“They (guidelines) are designed to protect all staff and customers from the spread of the virus. We will need a collective to unite in our efforts to create a safe environment for all staff, customers and others who may enter the outlets,” Pillay said.

Liquor

She added that staff at these outlets would be expected to adhere to the basic hygiene criteria and to wash and sanitise their hands. According to Pillay, the industry would self-regulate to limit the quantity of liquor available for sale in any transaction to support and promote responsible consumption. We have set up a hotline number (0800014856) for any incidents of criminality during this period,” said Pillay.

She added that most of the 34500 taverns had been provided with personal protective equipment to give to their customers. The sale of alcohol would be permitted from Monday and Thursday between 9am and 5 pm.

The Southern African Alcohol Policy Alliance in South Africa has come out in support of the restrictions on alcohol sales. Spokesperson Maurice Smithers said the level 3 measures must focus on the proper resourcing of monitoring and enforcement capacity, together with an efficient reporting mechanism for non-compliance.

“This is important to ensure that there isn’t a spike in liquor-related harms, especially as the easing of the ban on liquor will be accompanied by more movement in public spaces with people returning to work in most sectors of the economy.

Schools in Western Cape expected to reopen

There will be no school for pupils in Grade 7 and 12 on Monday. But the Western Cape said schools in the province will reopen on Monday.

Western Cape Education MEC Debbie Schafer said the school week will begin with orientating the pupils to the new procedures they will need to follow at the schools.

Teachers and school management in the rest of the country are expected to report for duty on Monday morning.

The Basic Education Department said the decision not to reopen schools was taken following a meeting with stakeholders on Saturday.

Minister Angie Motshekga is expected to brief the nation on Monday morning.

Meanwhile, the South African Democratic Teachers’ Union (Sadtu) said parents shouldn’t send their children to school until it’s safe.

The union says many schools are not ready to reopen because they don’t have protective gear and water, and do not meet the safety requirements.

“We therefore call on all schools not to reopen until the non-negotiables have been delivered to all schools,” Sadtu said in a statement.

“To further contribute to disparities between schools would be irresponsible.

“The reaction of the Western Cape to the call not to commence with the opening of schools will be closely scrutinized, especially whether they will show solidarity with the plight of other provinces and indeed, sympathy with the plight of thousands of our teachers and children across the nation.”

The Congress of South African Students said no pupil should return to school until adequate PPE is provided by the Education Department.

Cosas president Thabang Mokoena said it’s pleased by the decision not to reopen schools on Monday.

Kelly Khumalo makes a Shocking revelation, says her Daughter is not Senzo Meyiwa’s

Singer Kelly Khumalo dropped a bombshell that left everyone shocked and in disbelief. This after the songstress and actress announced on live radio that the daughter we all believed she shared with late Orlando Pirates soccer star Senzo Meyiwa, is actually not a Meyiwa.

According to African culture, if a man impregnates a woman out of wedlock, he has to pay “damages”. Senzo, who has a 6-year-old daughter with Kelly Khumalo, did not pay damages. and for that reason, Kelly Khumalo said her daughter is not a Khumalo and will never be.

Kelly explained: “The child isn’t a Meyiwa, she’s Khumalo. And I don’t see the necessity of sitting down and talking with the Meyiwas. We aren’t family and will never be.”

Kelly Khumalo & Senzo Meyiwa

In an Ukhozi FM interview on Irvin Sihlophe’s Ezemidlalo sports show on Friday, Kelly said Mzansi hated her because of the Meyiwas. But said she’d forgiven them and had moved on, adding she’d left them to be dealt with by God.

Kelly also commented on allegations of being involved in her baby daddy’s murder.

“How is it my fault? Is it my fault because Senzo loved me? I don’t think the thought of it being my fault that Senzo was shot comes from South Africa.“I think the people who played a role in driving South Africa to hate me is Senzo’s family. They subjected me to a lot of hate and drove South Africa to hate me as well.”

She said the Meyiwas called her all sorts of names.

Insisted Kelly: “They never loved me. If you search Google, you’ll see they said a lot of things about me.”

And in response to her daughter’s questions about her dad, Kelly said she told her Senzo was in heaven and would one day know about her. The singer also accused the Meyiwas of delaying the arrest of Senzo’s killers.

Senzo Meyiwa

“They’re the reason the killers haven’t been found,” Kelly asserted.

“They focused on hating me and finding me guilty instead of trying to find out who killed Senzo.”

She said Senzo was a hands-on dad and wished he was around to watch his daughter mature.

Senzo Meyiwa’s uncle Sfiso Meyiwa said they don’t hate Kelly but there was a misunderstanding between both parties.

“We’re willing to sit down with her and sort things out if she doesn’t mind.”

About the damages, he said: “It’s our wish to go to the Khumalo’s and pay the damages. But we don’t know when we’ll go there.”
