Eskom announces Stage 2 power cuts till Monday

Eskom on said Friday that Stage 2 load shedding would start on 9am on Friday and continue through to 6 am on Monday . The embattled power utility explained in a statement that the rolling blackouts were due to a shortage of generation capacity and depleted emergency resources.

We are taking out three big units for planned maintenance today. Unplanned outages were at 12 722 MW as at 5:30am this morning.  Earlier on Friday CEO Andre de Ruyter warned that South Africans should expect increased load shedding for the foreseeable future.

De Ruyter told a media briefing the power utility did not take the decision to impose more scheduled blackouts lightly but had no choice because of the problems inherent in the power system at the moment. We are particularly scrupulous about the imposition of load shedding. It is not a decision we take lightly…” De Ruyter said.

Load Shedding

It is obviously very regrettable to do this to South Africa but we cannot avoid it given the state of the system where we are right now. Our system is constrained, it unreliable and unpredictable and it is prone to unplanned outages and breakdowns.

He did not give a clear time estimate of how Eskom foresaw load shedding would be needed. It returned to load shedding on Thursday after the country was plunged into crisis in December when the power utility took the unprecedented step of imposing Stage 6 load shedding.

Eskom CEO André de Ruyter apologises

Eskom CEO AndrĂ© de Ruyter has apologised for the historic neglect of maintenance, which has led to load-shedding. Speaking at a media briefing about the utility’s operational performance, he said the board has now given the thumbs up for a new maintenance strategy.

Eskom, however, says the public can expect an increase in power cuts. We will, unfortunately, have to expect some increase in load-shedding. We are going to have to do this in a structured, careful managed way,” he said. De Ruyter said the government’s plan to split Eskom into three separate entities – generation, transmission and distribution – is being accelerated.

André de Ruyter

“We are in the process of appointing a board for each of these entities – we should be able to finalise these appointments, hopefully, during the course of next week.

He added that Eskom officials will go through lifestyle audits to curb corruption but insists full public disclosure of contracts will not be legally permissible. Eskom’s systems remain constrained with the energy availability at 68 percent – the lowest it’s ever been. This means more maintenance and more power cuts.

Vanessa Nakate cropped out of a photo of white climate activists. It’s time to stop erasing African voices

When Ugandan climate change activist Vanessa Nakate attended the World Economic Conference in Davos, Switzerland, she was excited to share her message with the world.

Instead, she ended up at the centre of a fierce debate over race and representation in the media.

Nakate, 23, had been invited to attend a youth climate science event. When news coverage of the event emerged, she noticed she had been cropped out of a photograph, where she appeared alongside activists Greta Thunberg, Isabelle Axelsson, Luisa Neubauer and Loukina Tille.

Nakate told CNN that the incident points to a wider issue of erasure of African voices in climate action conversations.

“Africans have truly been erased from the map of climate action,” Nakate said during an interview at her home in Uganda.
“Very many African activists have been doing a lot of work, putting in a lot of effort, trying to get their message heard and listened to,” she added.

The cropped photo was taken by a photographer for The Associated Press, and Nakate confronted the agency about the incident on Twitter, writing “Why did you remove me from the photo? I was part of the group!”

She added in a video statement: “It was the first time in my life that I understood the definition of the word ‘racism.’ ”
The AP apologized in a statement Friday saying it regretted publishing the photo.

The incident prompted soul searching within the organization, according to an AP news story. The story reported that the AP intended to expand diversity training for employees.

Nakate says the experience left her feeling “sad and worthless,” because not only was she initially cropped out of the AP image, her presence was also not reported in initial versions of an article on the conference.

“My reaction was more of a feeling of sadness and a feeling of being worthless and having wasted my time at the press conference. Because I did not just see the photo, I went ahead to read the article. And, in the article still, I was not introduced as one of the activists who were at the press conference,” she says.

Her name appeared in later versions.

Nakate was inundated with support on social media after the AP photo went viral. Thunberg condemned the agency’s action on her social media pages.

“The online reaction has been so powerful and very supportive. Despite all the hurt and the depression, I had very many people who came out and supported me,” she said.

“People have been pouring out all kinds of support, and speaking against any kind of discrimination or injustice towards African climate activists.”

Rather than erase her from the conversation, the crop instead has strengthened her voice and catapulted her to global recognition, with a newly verified Twitter account and thousands of new followers to her cause.

Nakate says what happened to her is not an isolated incident and is she will fight to ensure that African activists have a seat at the global table.

“Many of these [African] activists have been going through these things, but they just did not have the strength to air them out,” she said.

“Now is the time to put an end to it.”

Reactions echoed Nakate’s sentiment that the crop was symptomatic of a movement that largely has been ignored by Western mainstream media.

Climate justice activist Jamie Margolin said, “The press has been consistently ‘cropping out’ youth of colour in their coverage of the climate action movement for years. We must rise up and demand better.”

Nakate grew up in Kampala and got involved in activism in December 2018 after being bothered by unusually high temperatures in her country.

Drawing inspiration from Thunberg, she staged a solitary strike outside Uganda’s Parliament to protest climate inaction and rising temperatures that was met with interest by security forces, she said.

‘When I went to the Parliament, a couple of policemen checked my placard quite a number of times trying to look for a message or any kind of plot that I had against the government,” she said.

Nakate is the founder of the climate action groups, Youth for Future Africa and the Rise Up Movement. She has taken part in 56 Fridays for Future protests and has spent more than 80 days campaigning for the Congo forests.

Experts say Africa is the most vulnerable to climate shocks, with more frequent droughts and floods stretching people to their limits as farmers and herders are left with little time to recover.

East Africa, which comprises Nakate’s home country of Uganda, is facing its worst locust invasion in decades after one of the wettest seasons in 40 years came on the back of drought — a situation scientists say is becoming the new normal.

In Uganda, floods and landslides have become more frequent in recent years, and government sources estimate that 300,000 people have been affected and 65,000 displaced.

Over the weekend, Nakate returned from Davos to the home she shares with her parents and four siblings in Kitintale, a middle-class suburb of the country’s capital, Kampala.

She said she believes the cropping incident has kickstarted a conversation that will change the framing of African climate change activists.

“Everyone is speaking against the erasure of African activists and the world has set their eyes on these African activists. I believe that now is the time for them to be given the platforms to speak out and to be listened to.”

But Mahumapelo said on Friday Mkhwebane would not be removed from her position and that she was doing a good job. Mkhwebane has been under fire from the opposition and calls mount for her removal.

Mahumapelo said the ANC will not support the motion of the DA against Mkhwebane in Parliament to axe her. There is no way that the ANC in Parliament will support the motion of the opposition in the form of the DA to remove the Public Protector,” said Mahumapelo. His comments came as he and another ANC MP Mosebenzi Zwane came out in support of Bongani Bongo in his corruption case.

Busisiwe Mkhwebane

Bongo, who is also an ANC MP, has been charged for trying to bribe evidence leader advocate Ntuthuzelo Vanara in the Eskom inquiry in Parliament a few years ago. Zwane said they support Bongo in the case and the former State Security minister has been vilified by the media without hearing his side of the story.

“This case has been running in the media, one-sided. It is sensible that comrade Bongo gets a chance to state his side of the story,” said Zwane. He said Bongo was innocent until proven otherwise by the court. “He should not be judged up until a finding is made,” said Zwane.
