NUM is calling for an independent investigation after four mineworkers died at the Tau Lekoa mine in Orkney in the North West. A fifth miner was rescued with serious injuries on Friday after the accident.
“The last person we talked to said: ‘We are suffocating please, bring us some oxygen’,” said NUM president Joseph Montisetse.
NUM said action must be taken if mine safety regulations were breached.
The miners were trapped underground after a tremor caused a rockfall.
Last year, 81 people died in the country’s mines, according to the department of mineral resources.
