Moja Love comes under fire for new reality show

TV channel Moja Love once again landed in hot water for its latest reality show, After Tears which has been labelled “insensitive” and “degrading. The channel which has become infamous for pushing the envelope once again missed the mark with some viewers on Tuesday night.

After Tears, which made its debut on the channel tells the stories of important figures in a community, how they died and how their death impacted on the community. The first episode featured the death and funeral service of Mlajero who was described as a “fun-loving 27-year-old that was popular for his dance moves and hosting the best parties

Viewers were left shocked when it was revealed that Mlajero apparently died of HIV/Aids and flooded Twitter with comments. Some viewers felt that such personal information should not be revealed on national TV out of respect for the dead and to protect the person’s family from the stigma attached to the condition. Moja Love has not yet commented on the backlash. This is also not the first time that the channel has come under fire.

During an interview on Metro FM in May, Moja Love head of production Bokani Moyo said the channel was showing uncomfortable truths.

“We are showing uncomfortable truths. It is true we live in a time, or society, where households are headed by women and the fathers of these children are nowhere to be found, or are not in the picture for whatever reason,” she said.
