Trial against Nkandla architect begins

The trial against Nkandla architect and project manager Minenhle Makhanya is expected to begin at the Pietermaritzburg High Court.

The Special Investigating Unit wants to recoup R155m spent on the controversial upgrades at former president Jacob Zuma’s homestead.

The case was postponed in 2019 by the High Court to allow Makhanya more time to prepare his defence.

The SIU Instituted a civil claim against Makhanya after the upgrades were found to be excessive.

It believes he’s responsible for the roughly R246m spent by the government on the home.
