Senior cop Jeremy Vearey’s axing described as witch-hunt

A witch-hunt and an orchestrated dismissal. That’s how the axing of Cape Town’s top cop Jeremy Vearey is being described by both political and civil society in the Western Cape.

Vearey was dismissed on Friday for social media posts considered to be derogatory, offensive, and disrespectful towards the national police commissioner but those weighing in say the punishment does not fit the crime.

The ANC and SACP in the Western Cape want the police minister to intervene.

They say Vearey’s dismissal has been orchestrated and will further destabilize policing in the province.

Police union Popcru says it supports Vearey and will lodge a dispute with the bargaining council in terms of procedural and substantive fairness.
