Residents who live near a cemetery in Geluksdal in Brakpan, Ekurhuleni, are at the mercy of the thugs.
This comes after the thugs removed the palisade fence around the cemetery and are hiding among the graves to rob people.
Resident Peter Stone said: “They removed the fence and metal rails on top of the graves.
Now that there’s nothing to steal, they are targeting our houses.”
Another resident said the thugs were not in the cemetery during the day, but came out at night.
“They sit there hiding and when a person approaches, they strike,” said the resident.
Residents said people have been stripped off their belongings including clothes.
“They drag the victims into the gravesite and make them take off their clothes and shoes,” said Rosemary Ndlazi.
On Saturday, 19 June, a man was approached by three men wearing masks and they took him to the cemetery, where they took his shoes and two cellphones.
Police spokesman Captain Johannes Ramphora confirmed the incident.
He said the victim was walking along 12th Street in Tsakane when he was approached by three men wearing masks. He said two of them were armed with firearms.
“They forced him to go to Geluksdal cemetery where they robbed him of his shoes and two cellphones valued at R2 500,” he said.
Ramphora said the victim had to walk barefoot to seek help.
“We urge people to be careful near the cemetery, especially at night,” he said.
