Charlotte Maxeke Hospital to remain closed

The Charlotte Maxeke hospital will remain closed. Its Oncology wing will be the only one opened. The hospital was gutted by a fire in April.

The South African Human Rights Commission says it has received complaints from cancer patients because they were unable to receive treatment at the facility.

Gauteng government spokesperson, Thabo Masebe says it’s unclear when the hospital will be fully operational.

“The hospital is closed, only the oncology building will open this week, subject to what we said earlier, to the conditions,” he said.

“The hospital remains closed and the patients that were in the hospital at the time of the fire were transferred to other facilities within the province and some of them have since been discharged so they are home.”
