World Health Organization sounds warning over upcoming religious festivals

Days ahead of Easter and two weeks before Ramadan, the World Health Organization on Wednesday cautioned against crowded indoor celebrations that could trigger a fresh surge in coronavirus infections.

“In countries experiencing widespread community transmission of the virus, virtual meetings, postponing or reducing such gatherings should be seriously considered,” said a WHO statement.

“Regardless of location, any religious service should be held outdoors wherever possible or be limited in size and duration, with physical distancing, ventilation, hand hygiene and mask use, as appropriate,” it added.

Better would be for people to mark the festivals with those they lived with and avoid meeting others — especially if feeling unwell or in isolation or quarantine, it said.
Indoor gatherings, even smaller ones, can be especially risky.

Experts are worried that some people may drop their guard while celebrating religious festivals, just as many countries are imposing restrictions to try to slow rising numbers of Covid-19 infections.

In the coming days, Christians celebrate Easter, while Muslims begin the fasting month of Ramadan on April 13.

Kusile Power Station is half way finished, after construction started in 2008

Eskom has announced that another unit at its coal-powered Kusile Power Station in Mpumalanaga has achieved commercial operation status, bringing the completion of the power plant to its halfway mark. Commercial operation means that the unit has now met the requirements for full technical, statutory, safety, and legal compliance.

“This brings to three the number of generation units that have achieved commercial status at the project, generating a maximum 2,400MW to support the South African power grid,” Eskom said.

“Bringing the 800MW unit to commercial status means construction activity has come to an end on half of the eMalahleni, Mpumalanga project.

Eskom

The power utility labelled the progress as a significant milestone, following two years of rigorous testing and optimisation since the unit was first synchronised into the grid in April 2019.

The commercial operation marked the contractual handover of the unit from the principal contractors to Eskom’s Generation division.

Eskom said that the construction, testing, and optimisation of the remaining three units – some of which are already providing intermittent power to the grid – are progressing well.

“Eskom is proud of its team at Kusile, who have delivered this third unit with extreme dedication, and working under challing conditions during periods of load-shedding and COVID-19 restrictions,” it said.

Kusile is the first power station in South Africa to use wet flue gas desulphurisation (WFGD) technology, which is capable of removing oxides of sulphur from the exhaust flue gas in power plants that burn coal or oil. This technology reduces the impact of its emissions to ensure compliance with air quality standards.

According to energy expert Chris Yelland, construction of Kusile started in 2008 and all six units were originally planned to be completed by 2014. However, by 2019 only Unit 1 was in commercial operation.

The project encountered significant delays due to various technical modifications which had to be made to the station as a result of major design problems. Its full completion has been delayed until 2023.

Slay Queen’s pun@ni rots after having s.e.x with a Blesser and then dumping him

A slay queen regrets ever being with a blesser because her life is living hell after she decided to dump him and now her vag!ina is rotting.

“I enjoyed receiving an R15 000 monthly allowance and we visited the most beautiful places,”

The 28-year-old slay queen from Orange Farm, south of Joburg, said they broke up and her life changed for the worst.

“I wanted a blesser and didn’t care how old he was,” . I had a friend who had a blesser and became ill.

“Before my friend died she told the blesser about me and I met him, After a week we started poking. And he’d send me money.” she said.

She wasn’t allowed to call him or take any pictures, and she had to be available at all times. But last year she met the jobless love of her life. She decided not to tell him about the blesser.

“We talked about future plans, but my boyfriend found out about the blesser,” she said.

“I always had money. I told him I’d inherited it. He said I should start a business or do something useful with the money. I kept spending and he became suspicious.” she added.

He apparently went through her phone and saw that she was s3xting her blesser. The boyfriend wanted to break up with her, but she begged him to stay.

Then she told the blesser she wanted out. “The blesser became furious. I didn’t think he’d be that mad because he has a wife and can easily get another young woman.”

He told her no man would ever poke her again! A week later her pun@ni started itching, developed growths, and became smelly.

She went to different gynaecologists and none of them have been able to help her. The blesser is in Malawi and wants nothing to do with her.

Gobela Zwelihle Hlophe said blessers use muthi to gain wealth and some even use snakes.“Whatever he was using, a snake or muthi, it needs something to feed on and the girl was that person.

“I’m not sure if she’ll find help. It’s hard to remove. The blesser can possibly help, but it’s unlikely.”

Easter holidays: Traffic officials focus on saving pedestrian lives

Traffic officials say one of their main objectives during this Easter long weekend would be to reduce the number of pedestrians killed on the country’s roads.

Officers have been deployed across the country as part of the Easter law enforcement operations.

Massive operations have been staged on major routes from Wednesday in anticipation of an increase in traffic volumes.

The Road Traffic Management Corporation’s Simon Zwane said officials would not tolerate drunken driving, speeding, and lawlessness on the roads.

“We know that over the Easter period, more than 48% of people who died on the roads are pedestrians, so we want to focus on their safety.”

Meanwhile, in KwaZulu-Natal, government authorities there say they planned to increase law enforcement visibility ahead of Easter.

Premier Sihle Zikalala on Wednesday said they wanted to ensure total compliance to COVID-19 regulations as well as reduce crime and accidents on the roads.

KZN MEC for Transport, Community Safety, and Liaison Peggy Nkonyeni has appealed to all road users to exercise responsibility during the Easter period.

She said lawlessness would not be tolerated.

“We are pleading with our people to ensure that they are adhering to the speed limits. We will be checking the roadworthiness of the vehicles, the validity of their licenses and we’ve ensure that there’s a multi-disciplinary team across the province.”

Nkonyeni said they had already started with multi-disciplinary roadblocks for the Easter period and planned to increase them as the number of commuters increased on the roads.

YouTube wants to hide dislikes to protect creators

YouTube recently announced that it is experimenting with temporarily removing the dislike button to prevent “dislike mobs” from negatively influencing content and channels. In the last few years, the company has been working on solutions to tackle these “dislike mobs”.

Essentially, these are individuals that purposely visit a video with the intention of ridiculing it, regardless of the content. According to feedback, creators say that the public dislike count can affect their well-being and motivate targeted campaigns of dislikes on a creator’s videos.

As a result, YouTube is testing designs that does not show the number dislikes a video has accrued. Instead, only the likes will be displayed publicly. This aims to improve creator experiences, while still allowing viewer feedback.

“Creators, you will still be able to see the exact number of likes and dislikes in YouTube Studio. For viewers, if you are in the experiment, you can still like or dislike a video to share feedback with creators and help tune the recommendations you see on YouTube,” the company said.

YouTube

The image below shows an example of what the experimental design looks like
YouTube is one of the most popular online content-streaming platforms, and how its audiences respond to videos can significantly affect how that content is promoted.

Despite the dislike button’s function to provide constructive feedback for content creators, many have claimed it is being used to unjustifiably lower the appeal of certain videos.

In one recent example, reports claimed that “dislike mobs” had purposefully attacked the inauguration of US President Joe Biden following the 2021 US presidential elections. A video shared on the White House’s official YouTube channel generated a flood of dislikes and negative comments.

YouTube previously confirmed it regularly removes any spam likes or dislikes from videos. Critics have claimed, however, that this was an attempt to distort valid negative feedback.

AG Maluleke: Gauteng paid R501 million in medical negligence claims

Auditor General Tsakani Maluleke on Wednesday said Gauteng paid R501 million in claims for medical negligence in 2019/20 even though only R2.6 million was budgeted for.

She has released the outcome of her department’s audits, which show that all provinces have been unable to budget for these claims.

Maluleke said in all provinces, health and education were the two departments that couldn’t budget properly and ended up overspending.

The Western Cape has regressed from its previous audit because of one entity – the Tourism, Trade and Investment Promotion Agency – but the province was still leading with 70% of clean audits and the lowest irregular expenditure.

Kwazulu-Natal is leading with the highest irregular expenditure of R9.7 billion.

Gauteng underestimated its rate of medical negligence.

“The Gauteng Department of Health in the year that we audited had budgeted R2.6 million for medical negligence claims. They ended paying R501 million in the year, which then takes away from other aspects of the budget for that year and for the forthcoming year.”

In the Free State, the Office of the Premier is among entities whose audits have improved.

MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela found guilty of violating ethics code

Western Cape Transport and Public Works MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela has been found to have breached the Executive Ethics Code by lying about GOOD secretary-general and MPL Brett Herron.

Acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka announced on Wednesday that her office found that Madikizela wilfully made false and misleading statements to the legislature about Herron. According to Gcaleka, Madikizela’s conduct constituted a breach of the Executive Ethics Code.

Herron complained about Madikizela, who is also the DA leader in the Western Cape, to Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane in November 2019. In his complaint, Herron accused Madikizela of wilfully misleading the legislature in breach of the code.

Bonginkosi Madikizela

As appropriate remedy, Gcaleka has ordered that Western Cape Premier Alan Winde to within a reasonable time but not later than 14 days after receiving her report submit a copy thereof and any comments thereon, together with a report on any action taken or to be taken in regard to the provincial legislature.

Herron alleged that Madikizela willfully made false and misleading statements to the legislature about him in July 2019 and that his conduct was improper and constituted a breach of the code.

Gcaleka on Wednesday released 21 reports, ten of which were closing reports.
Madikizela is the second Western Cape MEC to be found to have breached the code.

In January, Mkhwebane found Western Cape local government, environmental affairs and development planning MEC Anton Bredell to have also violated the code.

A complaint against Bredell was lodged by the ANC’s leader in the provincial legislature Cameron Dugmore on February 19, 2020.

Dugmore accused Bredell in his capacity as DA provincial chairperson of writing a letter to the acting executive mayor, the speaker, the chief whip and the DA caucus chairperson in the George Local municipality instructing them not to appoint a senior official until permission was granted by the DA federal executive.

Gcaleka said she was encouraged that Winde was implementing the remedial action taken directed against Bredell for breaching the Executive Ethics Code.

Ace Magashule vows to remain a loyal ANC member

Embattled ANC secretary-general Ace Magashule has vowed to remain a loyal member of his party, but refused to reveal whether he would step aside from his position within the next 28 days.

Magashule was in Soweto on Wednesday when he left scores of media people guessing about his future after ANC president Cyril Ramaphosa ordered all those facing criminal charges to step aside or face suspension.

Outlining the decision on Monday, Ramaphosa said: “All members who have been charged with corruption or other serious crimes must step aside within 30 days, failing which they should be suspended in terms of Rule 25.70 of the ANC Constitution.

Ace Magashule

“The meeting emphasised that the 30-day period will be to enable the implementation of the decision in line with the guidelines, not to review the decision,” Ramaphosa said.

Traditionally, Magashule was expected to also address the media at the party’s headquarters on Tuesday to further explain the ANC national executive committee (NEC) resolution but he was a no-show.

This prompted a horde of media, upon knowing about his scheduled appointment to plant trees, to descend on Soweto and he was bombarded about his reaction to the NEC’s decision.

While he did not give an emphatic response on whether he would step down or not, Magashule was adamant that despite the NEC’s decision, he would remain a “loyal member of the ANC.

“My heart is black, green and gold. I will die in the ANC. I respect the decision of the ANC,” he said.
Journalists wanted Magashule to reveal whether he would comply with the decision or would defy and, possibly, rally some of his supporters to act against the ANC.

In his reply, Magashule wanted none of it and said: “I respect the resolution of the ANC.”

He did, however, not reveal whether he would resign.
In his bid to steer the media from further repeating the same question, Magashule said: ’’The president of the ANC, Comrade Matamela Ramaphosa, conveyed the resolution of the ANC. I was part of that meeting. What else do you want?’’

Magashule was accompanied to Soweto by the controversial uMkhonto weSizwe Military Veterans Associations (MKMVA) spokesperson, Carl Niehaus, who was criticised for his role in the radical economic transformation (RET) forces.

Niehaus was signalled out at the NEC as the person responsible for the divisions within the ANC and an alleged plot to undermine Ramaphosa. There were also growing concern that Niehaus was operating from Magashule’s office. Asked about Niehaus’ presence, Magashule said: “Carl is working in my office and he is not controlling me.

The Bellville Magistrates Court has been cleared by the Office of the Public Protector of improper conduct or maladministration after not processing a protection order for a Cape Town mother.

This follows claims that Altecia Kortje was turned away when she tried to apply for the order against her boyfriend and father of her children last year.

The bodies of Kortje and her seven-year-old daughter were discovered a week after she approached the court.
Her boyfriend Ryan Smith was arrested for the murders in June last year.

Deputy Minister of Justice and Correctional Services John Jeffrey had asked the Public Protector to investigate claims that Kortje was turned away by the court.

Acting Public Protector Kholeka Gcaleka has addressed the media on the investigation.

“She left the court about an hour after her arrival without having completed and submitting the application form for further assistance.”

Gcalekea said they met with Kortje’s family to discuss the findings.

“It was indeed a heartbreaking ordeal. It’s a family that has lost a daughter and a granddaughter because of gender-based violence. They are still living with the trauma of what happened, but they welcomed our visit.”

Transport union wants answers from NPA over delay in state capture arrests

The United National Transport Union (Untu) has called on the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) to explain the delay in arresting and prosecuting those responsible for the loss of billions of rand through state capture.

Untu initially directed the questions about the lack of prosecutions to Public Enterprises Minister Pravin Gordhan, who referred them to the NPA.
According to the union’s spokesperson, Sonja Carstens, Gordhan said he was not responsible for prosecutions and that the head of the NPA should rather respond.

zondo inquiry into the state capture

The minister told the Fedusa Conference in January 2019 that “prosecution of corrupt employees of state-owned enterprises was imminent”

Untu, the majority union in Transnet and the Passenger Rail Agency of SA (Prasa), is affiliated to Fedusa.

Carstens said during that conference, Gordhan said corrupt officials would be “in the dock” within months and if found guilty, “walking around in orange clothing.”

Carstens said Untu was frustrated because workers continued to face the consequences of state capture, yet justice was not seen despite the evidence over the past year in front of the Zondo Commission into State Capture which implicated several individuals.

“Justice delayed is justice denied,” Carstens said.
General secretary of Untu Steve Harris said the leadership of the union and Fedusa would now make an appointment with advocate Shamila Batohi, National Director of Public Prosecutions, for her to explain why prosecutions have not yet commenced.
