AKA – I am a nicer guy today than I was two or three years ago

AKA has reflected on his career so far and claimed that he is a much nicer guy than he was two or three years ago. The star told media at a press conference for his AKA Orchestra eThekwini concert on Wednesday that he had been humbled by life.

AKA
I am a nicer guy today than I was two or three years ago. That is because I became a father and so forth. All the mistakes I have made have happened in public, I am under their scrutiny,” he said, adding that he doesn’t enjoy taking pictures with people
The star added that he had been saved by music and the ability to put his emotions into his songs. The rapper told TshisaLIVE recently that he had matured since his days of beefing with other artists like Black Coffee and said he was grateful for the growth.

AKA

“With me and Black Coffee there has always been like this … I don’t know what you want to call it… I think it is growth. I am a different person now than I was then. Back in the days.

AKA and DJ Zinhle

Reflecting on his growth, AKA told fans last year that he went from being the most hated rapper in Mzansi in 2016 to a fave. The love is overwhelming. Two years ago I was the most hated person in this industry. Today I’m the f**king king of the world. Always stayed true to myself though. Whether I was right or wrong,” he wrote.

Lorcia Cooper opens up about her struggles with her thyroid

Actress Lorcia Cooper has opened up about her journey to healing after battling with her thyroid. Lorcia shared on Instagram that after posting about her struggles with swollen lymph nodes, she got plenty of DMs from women who shared their own stories. I was so overwhelmed… I decided that instead of waiting for my healing to be complete, I will instead post my journey, one step at a time.

Lorcia Cooper

So here’s one part of the carboxy therapy which is my third session and every time I leave a session I can see my face changing. Dark circles and discolouration around the eye area are lightening up, the puffiness is reducing, my skin looking less dull.” She explained that her lymph nodes, which were quite swollen, have also drained down to almost normal size.

Lorcia Cooper

“I also realised that there is so much focus on aesthetics being a ‘don’t age’ solution but in fact it is helping so many of us who just want to be ‘ourselves’ again. Recognising the person we see in the mirror, the journey of healing is always an inside and out process. The inside work is continual and ever-present… be encouraged, the evolving of self is not ever in vain.

Angie Motshekga is SA’s acting president as Cyril Ramaphosa backs the Boks in Japan

Minister of basic education Angie Motshekga has been appointed acting president while President Cyril Ramaphosa travels to Japan to support the Springboks at the Rugby World Cup final against England on Saturday.

This is because Ramaphosa’s deputy, David Mabuza, is in China, chairing talks between the two governments. Motshekga’s acting position will last from Friday until Sunday. In a statement on Thursday, presidency spokesperson Khusela Diko said Ramaphosa will leave today for Yokohama, to lead the nation’s support for the Springboks.

President Cyril Ramaphosa at Business Women's Association of South Africa (BWASA)

“The President will lend his support to the Springboks and supporters of the national team in terms of his constitutionally assigned role of ‘promoting the unity of the nation and that which will advance the Republic’,” she said. In a video call with Springbok captain Siya Kolisi before the semifinal match against Wales on Sunday, Ramaphosa said he was going to the final to lift the trophy.

The Boks beat Wales 19-16. I’m coming to the final, I’m coming to lift the Webb Ellis trophy with you. So make sure you book my ticket to the final,” Ramaphosa said. The final is a repeat of the 2007 tournament in France, where these two sides also squared off in the most important encounter of the Rugby World Cup,” Diko said. South Africa won that game 15-6.

The clock is ticking for Jacob Zuma to file appeal papers

The legal team of former President Jacob Zuma remained mum on whether or not they have filed their appeal papers before the Pietermaritzburg High Court on Thursday. Questions sent to his lead advocate Dan Mantsha were not answered. Zuma’s three-person legal team which includes Advocate Thobani Masuku SC (senior counsel) and Mpilo Sikhakhane has to file the appeal papers by Friday, November 1, 2019 to allow the appeal to be heard on November 22.

They have to state why the court must grant him leave to appeal an October 11, 2019 ruling which said he must face prosecution for corruption. The corruption, fraud and money laundering charges stems from the R30 billion Arms Deal of 1999. In that case, it was alleged he received kickbacks from co-accused French arms company Thales.

The company allegedly paid him R500 000 which was moved via companies owned by Schabir Shaik. Shaik was convicted in 2005 for those offences. Arguing before the Pietermaritzburg High Court on October 15, one of Zuma’s lead lawyers Advocate Masuku SC said the legal team was ready to proceed with the case but would still like to exercise the right to appeal.

Jacob Zuma

Appearing for the National Prosecuting Authority (NPA), Advocate Billy Downer indicated that they would oppose the appeal as they want the prosecution to start immediately.

Speaking to Independent Media three weeks ago, constitutional law expert Pierre de Vos said Zuma’s prospects of success were very slim as most of the arguments that he has previously advanced in his court battles have already been dismissed. This is despite Zuma’s optimism to his supporters, in an address outside the court, that a higher court can reach a different decision.

Mmusi Maimane is a good guy, just badly advised: Helen Zille

Newly elected DA federal council chairperson Helen Zille insists there was no bad blood between her and Mmusi Maimane, but that the former DA leader was badly advised in both his resignation from the party and in what has been dubbed the “Crush Zille” campaign.

“I like Mmusi, I respect him. We were very close until people advised him that if you want to get rid of the tag of being the head of a white party, which is totally untrue — it was a way of the ANC of keeping this race narrative alive that he was Zille’s puppet — they said to him ‘you know, Crush Zille’ and then you won’t be a puppet any more. That’s where all the problems came from,” she told the Cape Town Press Club on Thursday.

“The bottom line is that he is a very good guy and I think he was badly advised for a very long time,” said Zille. She said the party would have loved for Maimane to remain an MP and that he, too, wanted to — but, regrettably, he had included a line in his speech about the DA not being the vehicle best suited to take forward the vision of building one SA for all.

“He put this line in his speech … and I said to him afterwards, ‘Why did you do it’? And he said to somebody else, not to me: ‘I was badly advised’,” revealed Zille, responding to a question about Maimane’s future. She said she wasn’t aware what lay in his future but was sure he would land on his feet because he was highly capable.

Helen Zille

“But he is a nice person and you can’t be a nice person if you want to be surviving in political leadership. Very hard,” she said. Maimane resigned as DA federal leader last Wednesday but announced that he would continue in the role of the party’s parliamentary leader until the end of the year. Zille revealed that had Maimane not resigned from the caucus the next day, DA MPs were going to oust him in a vote of no confidence.

She also revealed details of how she found out that Maimane and Athol Trollip were going to resign while chairing her first federal executive meeting. I started getting WhatsApp messages from the media asking for comment on Mmusi’s resignation. I then get a WhatsApp message from my son, who said: ‘I’m really sorry it’s playing out this way.’

“I said I’m sitting next to him and the meeting is going well. I stopped the meeting and I said, ‘I need to know what’s going on. Is something going on here?’ Athol and Mmusi said they were both planning to resign at a press conference at lunchtime, and this was half an hour to go.

Earlier that day she had spoken to Maimane a couple of times about the agenda of the meeting, including the report of the review panel, and she even proposed to him that the party should go to an early congress by April and that he should decide, depending on how the lay of the land looked, whether he’d like to stand for leadership at that congress.

She had thought they had agreed that he would stay on as parliamentary leader until congress. Even after Maimane and Trollip confirmed their plan to resign and could not be convinced to reconsider, it was agreed that Maimane would stay on as parliamentary leader.

“Unfortunately he went out and read a pre-prepared speech and he said the DA was no longer the vehicle best suited to take forward the vision of building one SA for all. If you say that and believe that you can go on as the parliamentary leader, well those two positions are entirely incompatible and of course the parliamentary caucus was up in arms — black and white — and he resigned before they tabled a motion of no confidence in him the next day because of that,” she said.

Makashule Gana to challenge John Steenhuisen for Mmusi Maimane’s job

Gauteng MPL and former DA youth leader Makashule Gana on Thursday joined the race to replace Mmusi Maimane as DA leader. Gana posted his announcement on social media on Thursday afternoon just a few minutes before the closure of nominations.

“After some reflections of what has been going on in the past few days and running, I have today accepted nomination for the position of [DA] interim federal leader. I am answering to the call of our activists across the country,” said Gana.

His announcement came just a few hours after his close ally and Gauteng DA education spokesperson, Khume Ramulifho, announced on Twitter he would be standing for federal chairperson. Gana’s candidacy comes just a few weeks after he was elected as the chairperson of the DA’s MPL Network, a structure that represents members of the provincial legislatures and National Council of Provinces.

John Steenhuisen

He will go head-to-head with DA parliamentary leader John Steenhuisen for the hotly contested position at the party’s federal council meeting scheduled for November 17.

When contacted on Thursday, Gana could not say if any of the party’s leaders backed his candidacy, only saying “the hard work begins now”. His last public campaign in the DA was for the party’s Gauteng premier candidate, but he was beaten to the position by then Tshwane mayor Solly Msimanga.

Steenhuisen reacted to Gana’s announcement on Twitter, saying: “Good luck Mfowethu, you are a good democrat and I look most forward to a good contest and a healthy exchange of ideas and initiatives to take our party forward.

Ace Magashule denounces fake news and intimidation tactics

Ace Magashule, the secretary-general of the ANC has accused some elements in the media of fighting factional political battles and for working with individuals who are using state resources in a bid to try and tarnish his name. This was after a journalist at a Sunday paper (City Press) sent questions on Thursday evening allegedly implicating him in the murder of a doctor whose name is known to IOL.

Magashule said he wants the public to see what he has been complaining about. This is the fake news that is peddled against me in order to tarnish my dignity and reputation in a coordinated and concerted effort,” he said.

He also relayed how last week, the Daily Maverick wrote that he was arrested at his home by members of the Hawks.
The article was crafted in such a manner that even the SABC’s Chriselda Lewis was quoted as observing my alleged arrest by the Hawks. These were all fake news. I am certain that the rank and file of the ANC are now able to see the decoy that is crafted from the proven evidence of political meddling at the Nasrec elective conference of the ANC,” he said.

Magashule added that he was appalled by the fact that some within our society are using the State resources which are supposed to be used in the fight against crime, but for factional political battles.

Ace Magashule

“I condemn this fake news with the contempt that it deserves. I am also aware that there are rogue elements within the South African Police Services who are used not only to tarnish the entire police force but also to sow divisions within the ANC. I state categorically that I will not leave this matter lying down,” he said.

Magashule said he has since instructed his attorneys to lodge complaints with the office of the National Commissioner as well as the Office of the Inspector General of Intelligence.

“I would like a full investigation to be carried out so that those who are peddling lies with the aim of destroying the carefully nurtured unity of the ANC can be exposed. These elements within our society are planting seeds within our people’s minds that I, and the collective leadership of the ANC consist of criminals who maim and kill for political survival,” he said.

This is not the first time that the City Press has ran a false story implicating a top politician in murder. Towards the end of last year, the paper ran a story peddled to the media by private investigator Paul O’Sullivan which claimed that a witness had found Deputy President David Mabuza’s hit list in his living room. The paper published the far-fetched story based on an affidavit purported to be from his niece.
According to Magashule: “The ANC leadership shall not be deterred from its goals to pursue radical transformation for the liberation of our people from the bondage of apartheid.

“I will, however in the interim reserve my rights to also lodge a complaint with the Minister of Police to ensure that his dedicated men and women are not used in these factional political battles… have no intention to breathe oxygen into this rubbish. The agent provocateurs are desperately and pathetically looking for a needle in a haystack. Lies have short legs,” he said.

Hellen Zille: DA has taken a knock but we will recover

Zille said the DA’s particular governing structures in Gauteng were extremely vulnerable, but she did not think it should be co-governing with the ANC or EFF. The problem in the DA was one of leadership, not race, and the party had to get that right, newly elected federal council chairperson Helen Zille has told the Cape Town Press Club.

“It’s not an easy thing to fix,” she said. Zille believed the resignations of Mmusi Maimane as federal leader, Athol Trollip as federal chairperson and Herman Mashaba as Johannesburg mayor had not caused a crisis in the party.

Rather, she said, their resignations had followed a process of identifying and analysing the problems the party were facing, which culminated in a review report by Ryan Coetzee, Tony Leon and Michiel le Roux.

“The loss across the board in by-elections was a symptom of our problems, not a cause, and the critical conclusion was that the current leadership was not capable of leading the DA out of this crisis. Zille said it was an unbelievably bold move by Maimane and the party to take the principle of accountability seriously, adding Maimane was “unbelievably courageous” in calling for the analysis and for taking the report to federal council instead of sweeping it under the rug.

Helen Zille

Zille admitted she was taken by surprise at the resignations, as had “nine-tenths” of the federal executive. We asked them not to, we asked them to rethink it. They said no, they wanted to go. I said right, we can do nothing about that. Zille said the DA’s particular governing structures in Gauteng were extremely vulnerable, but she did not think it should be co-governing with the ANC or EFF.

“We have taken a knock, I don’t want to be full of bravado but our polls have nicely stabilised this past week and it has not been nearly anything like a setback which people have claimed it to be.
