Legia Warsaw 1 – 0 Leicester City

Brendan Rodgers’ side have started the season inconsistently and now have work to do in Group C following a defeat to go with their 2-2 draw at Napoli in the opening game. Leicester’s winless start to their Europa League campaign continued with a limp defeat at Legia Warsaw, who collected a famous victory in Poland.

Azerbaijan national Mahir Emreli scored the only goal in the 31st minute, outmuscling Daniel Amartey on the edge of the box before firing in a low finish via the foot of the post. Leicester lacked rhythm but did have chances with Ayoze Perez screwing wide in the first half after being put through by Patson Daka.

Centre-half Jannik Vestergaard had a golden opportunity to equalise in the second half, but his header from four yards out was somehow kept out by Legia goalkeeper Cezary Miszta’s stunning reflex save.

The group’s other game was a crazy affair, with Spartak Moscow edging Napoli 3-2 in a feisty match featuring 12 yellow cards and two reds. Quincy Promes made it 3-1 in the 90th minute and although Victor Osimhen pulled one back for Napoli four minutes later, the Serie A side could not find a leveller with 11 minutes added on.

Daka yet to start firing
Last season’s FA Cup winners Leicester are yet to get going this term, winning just two of their opening six Premier League games and finding life difficult in Europe.

A worry for Rodgers will be the lack of a cutting edge in front of goal, firing in 18 shots during the contest, but unable to find the net.

Kelechi Iheanacho was ruled out because of travel document issues and top scorer Jamie Vardy was left on the bench so £22m summer signing Daka led the line. The Zambian arrived with an eye-catching reputation having scored 27 goals in 28 games last term to lead Red Bull Salzburg to a fourth consecutive Austrian league title.

But he is yet to get off the mark for the Foxes, despite having more efforts at goal (5) than any other player. A header lacked power and was comfortable for Miszta and Daka was then found with a chipped ball by James Maddison – introduced on the hour mark – but the frontman miscued from 12 yards out.

Desperate to try to break his duck, Daka shinned an overhead kick off target from a promising position, while Maddison had a shot cleared off the line late on. As Leicester poured forward in search of an elusive equaliser, Legia had two presentable opportunities late in the game.

But Lirim Kastrati’s drive was pushed onto the post by Kasper Schmeichel’s outstretched leg and former Southampton loanee Tomas Pekhart side-footed wide with the goal gaping.

Tottenham 5 – 1 NS Mura

Harry Kane came off the bench to score a 20-minute hat-trick for Tottenham. After a mixed start to the season, including a draw in their Group G opener against Rennes, Spurs dominated the first half against the Slovenian side after scoring two early goals. Harry Kane came off the bench to score a 20-minute hat-trick as Tottenham recorded their first Europa Conference League win with victory over NS Mura.

Manager Nuno Espirito Santo made nine changes after Sunday’s north London derby defeat, with only Dele Alli and Sergio Reguilon keeping their places. Alli opened the scoring on four minutes, drilling his penalty into the bottom-left corner after he was fouled by goalkeeper Matko Obradovic.

Giovani lo Celso added a second six minutes later, collecting Harry Winks’ pass before driving the ball into the roof of the net. The visitors had only 32% possession and no shots on target in the first half, but pulled a goal back eight minutes after the restart through a brilliant Ziga Kous volley.

As the visitors grew into the game Nuno was forced to turn to his bench, bringing on Kane, Son Heung-Min and Lucas Moura on 60 minutes.

It did not take long for the substitutes to have an impact as Kane linked up with Moura for his first goal and Son for his second, before side-footing past Obradovic for his 16th career hat-trick. Nuno was expected rotate his squad with another quick turnaround before Sunday’s Premier League game against Aston Villa.

Before Thursday’s match, the Portuguese said Mura would be a “tough opponent” and the Slovenian champions, who are fifth in the 10-team division this year, gave Spurs a scare in the second half.

It was a missed opportunity for some of Spurs’ fringe players and Mura were on top after the break. The hosts looked shaky after conceding that brilliant Kous volley, leaving Nuno with no choice but to bring on Kane, Son and Moura to swing the momentum back into Spurs’ favour.

Less than 10 minutes after the trio’s introduction, England striker Kane latched on to a perfect cross from Moura before finding the far corner. Kane’s second came eight minutes later, firing home with his first touch from close range after a brilliant run by Son down the left.

He added a third three minutes from time with a clever run in between the Mura defence before controlling Lo Celso’s through ball and side-footing past the keeper.

The 28-year-old is the first player to score a hat-trick in the Champions League, Europa League and Europa Conference League. Victory leaves Spurs top of Group G on goal difference, level on points with French side Rennes who came from behind to beat Dutch side Vitesse.

Online car licence renewal app launch date announced

The South African Post Office (SAPO) says it has begun development on a mobile application to renew motor vehicle licences and plans to release it by the end of October.

In a statement issued this week, the Post Office said it would like its clients to complete the whole licence renewal in the comfort of their own homes or offices. The whole renewal process, including payment, will be done on the app — leaving only the last step of receiving the actual disc.

Motorists will do this in one of two ways: they can choose to collect from a nearby Post Office outlet nearby, or SAPO can deliver the disc to you for a nominal delivery fee. We are serious about serving our customers’ needs — we have introduced a culture of being obsessed with the customer,” said Nomkhita Mona, Group CEO of the SA Post Office.

“This service — part of the SAPO in my Pocket strategy — will be available by the end of October this year. The Post Office will continue to offer in-store renewal at selected Post Office branches. According to SAPO, more than 3 million car owners chose the Post Office to renew their vehicle licences in the past year. An additional service offered by the SA Post Office is the bulk motor vehicle licence renewal for fleets and employees of companies.

This service offers the collection of all necessary documentation from company premises, taking them back to the Post Office for processing, printing and delivery back to the offices. SAPO said it has already signed up several corporates and is in the process of offering this service to more companies and other customers.

The service is offered in all provinces except the Western Cape, where SAPO expects to offer it “in the near future”. Not all SA Post Office branches are licenced to provide the car licence renewal service, and it is advisable to check the availability of the service at specific branches.

“Huge winds of change are blowing within the SA Post Office, even in the face of massive financial challenges, there are equally massive opportunities for us to effect meaningful change — and deliver an institution that all South Africans can once again, be proud of,” Mona said. According to the Post Office, Mona’s strategy of getting back to basics, introduced since her arrival at the organisation six months ago, has started showing green shoots.

As the organisation had regressed so far, operationally and financially, Mona said she was under no illusion that this would be an easy task. However, she is confident that she is equal to it. In addition to its app development, SAPO said it has also streamlined the motor vehicle licence service alongside all service offerings at the Post Office. It said the focus is on cutting the queues to reasonable levels and serve clients within an acceptable length of time.

To achieve this, SAPO introduced separate queues for its regular customers doing their routine transactions — including money transfers, bill payments, and other postal services. This is in addition to other changes, such as scheduling Covid-19 grant payments based on the last three digits of ID numbers, and allowing grant beneficiaries to collect their payments at Pick n Pay and Boxer stores.

SAPO promised that other channels would be introduced in due course, including offering the service in conjunction with spaza shops in local areas.

Her stellar performance and craft have made her one of Mzansi’s finest. Several questions have been asked on how much does Dawn Thandeka King racks at month-end.

Despite Uzalo being one of the most-watched soapies the drama series was plunged with salary woes that led to the mass exodus of actors.

I’m not one to run from problems – President Ramaphosa on Marikana visit

President Cyril Ramaphosa says his visit to Marikana is still on the radar, adding that he is not one to run from challenges. Answering questions at Luthuli House regarding the party’s manifesto launch on Wednesday evening, Ramaphosa said his visit to Marikana needed more planning as families of the killed miners were still waiting for answers.

“The Marikana issue has been raised with me a number of times. We just want to get full agreement from various stakeholders on the way forward. A Marikana visit is still on my radar. As you know, I’m not one to run from problems. I will go.”

Ramaphosa also touched on corruption, saying the ruling party was committed to dealing with corruption and further commending the Pretoria High Court’s decision to extend the Commission of Inquiry into Allegations of State Capture.

“The ANC has committed itself to act against corruption. We have taken a view that our people abhor corruption.”

Ramaphosa admitted that the party’s step-aside resolution did cause divisions, but added it had to be implemented.

“Yes, we’ve had divisions. And we’ve now agreed that the only way to move forward is to do what the national conference agreed on. And I think we’ve settled around that,” he said.

“Focusing on the implementation of the conference resolution, more and more of us are accepting that this is the way to go, and in time, as we move on, this is going to cement and forge that unity.”

On the ruling party’s failure to pay salaries, Ramaphosa said they were doing everything in their power to get the funds for the salaries.

“In regards to the ANC staff, this is a sore point for me. Some of the people who used to fund the ANC have now said they don’t like the idea that we are publicising that they are funding us. It puts us on the back foot when our staff has not been paid. We are working on programmes and efforts to pay the staff of the ANC,” he said.

This is how iPhone users can trace their device while completely turned off

Apple’s iOS 15 software update has made it possible for iPhone users to track their devices when they have run out of battery or been switched off, according to a report from The Verge.

The new tracking feature is in the “Find My” app and is called “Find My Network”. It is available on iPhone 11 and newer devices. According to MacRumors, Apple has not disclosed how this feature works. However, it speculates that the U1 chip, Bluetooth, or NFC continues to be powered in the background even when your device is off or out of battery. If your battery is depleted, tracking may only last a few hours.

Users who want to activate the feature can take the following steps:

Go to Settings, tap on your name, and then on Find My.
Tap on Find My iPhone.
Enable Find My Network.
Once activated, your device can be traced using the “Find My” app on MacOS, another iPhone, or by signing in to iCloud.com/find on a web browser with your Apple ID.

Apple announced iOS 15 on 7 June, and the new software includes several updates such as voice isolation on Facetime, redesigned notifications, and tab grouping in the Safari browser.

The Cupertino-based tech company acknowledged a flaw in iPhone 13 software earlier this week — which will be addressed with a future software update that is already in beta testing. The issue related to the “Unlock with Apple Watch” feature not functioning on iPhone 13 devices.

University of Free State students under attack

The University of Free State (UFS) and law enforcement have had enough of the recent murders of and attacks on students in the past week, who seemed to be the target by criminals across universities since 2019.

Yet another group of students were attacked on Sunday by three armed assailants who accosted their rented accommodation in Phuthaditjhaba.

One of the students managed to overpower one of the attackers and disarmed him, said district commissioner of the Mangaung metro policing, Major-General Arthur Adams.

“He overpowered this suspect, disarmed him, and managed to shoot and wound him and his accomplice. In the process, one got away…”

This incident comes a week after three students were attacked and shot by three assailants in the early hours of the morning last Wednesday in Botjhabela Village. The students attended the UFS QwaQwa campus.

First-year social science student Sigcino Zimba, originally from KwaZulu-Natal (KZN), died at the scene.

While the other two students were immediately rushed to Mofumahadi Manapo Mopeli Regional Hospital, second-year administration student Thabani Manqele, also from KZN, died in hospital the following day.

The third student, however, survived the shooting and was discharged from hospital at the weekend, said rector
and vice-chancellor of the UFS Prof Francis Petersen.

Adams said the district commissioner of Phuthaditjaba believed that the modus operandi employed by the group of suspects on Monday, is similar to the one of last Wednesday.

But yet another death was reported last Wednesday, with second-year engineering student Wonder Dlamini being found dead in his room of one of the residences on the Bloemfontein campus.

Police were investigating the incident. Petersen said crimes and murders seemed to be prevalent among students over the past two years.

These included the dismembering of Fort Hare University law student Nosicelo Mtebeni in August. In the same month, a student from Walter Sisulu University was stabbed and killed in one of the university residences.

“Another Walter Sisulu University student died outside a bar. On 8 February, Yonela Boli, a 24-year-old Fort Hare University student died after allegedly being stabbed by a close female friend. About two weeks later, Boli’s friend, Olwethu Tshefu, a 30-year-old Fort Hare University student, was also stabbed to death.”

Following the attack of UFS students this past Sunday, two arrests were made.

“Two of the suspects are under police guard and an investigation is ongoing.

“Within the foreseeable future, we should conclusively be saying these are the suspects linked to the first incidents of the two students who were shot and killed, or not,” said Adams.

President Cyril Ramaphosa says he will be taking up the red list travel ban with UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson.

The economy is taking a knock as the UK is South Africa’s biggest tourist partner.

“We don’t have the need to retaliate… because the UK is an important trading partner to South Africa, one of the very important ones.

“We should rather engage, and through our engagement, we hope we will find a solution,” he said.

No more mumbling as Zakes Bantwini drops Osama lyrics – Video

After making fans wait for a while, musician Zakes Bantwini has finally saved them from the “embarrassment” of mumbling through his latest hit track Osama by creating a lyrics music video.

Osama caused a stir on the internet after Zakes’ live performance at Kunye last week went viral. The song trended for several days on Twitter and people applauded the musician for what some dubbed the “anthem of the year”.

In the video Zakes revealed that the word Osama means “lion” and that the song uses the word in the context of what a lion symbolises for most Africans.

“In Africa, lions symbolise protection, wisdom and power.”

Zakes also answered the question of translating, saying the lyrics are not one particular language, but instead can be explained as glossolalia, aka “speaking in tongues”.

Glossolalia is defined as the phenomenon of (apparently) speaking in an unknown language, especially in religious worship.

Sing along with the lyrics below:

Even though people seem to love the song, DJ Black Coffee recently left people shocked when he explained why he won’t play Zakes’ version of Osama, despite the song being classified as a banger by most house music lovers in SA.

Black Coffee joined the people raving about the hit, however his true feelings about the song surfaced later when he revealed that though it was a jam, he was not going to play it or include it in his set as house lovers in SA had called for him to do.

The DJ said the Zakes and Kasango version was “nice” but he still preferred the original version.

More than 4.5 million people in Gauteng have been vaccinated

More than 4.5 million people in Gauteng have been jabbed. That’s according to the provincial government. It also says over two million people are fully vaccinated.

But the province vows not to sit back. It will be part of the national Vooma Weekends campaign from this Friday. The aim is to intensify efforts to vaccinate more people.

The milestone comes as the Gauteng provincial government’s vaccination rollout programme continues to expand through innovative partnerships between government, civil society, faith-based organisations, media, retail and the private sector,” the provincial department explained.

The department said additional vaccination sites are being opened, as more centres operate during weekends for the convenience of those who are at work during weekdays.

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane clears President Cyril Ramaphosa

Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane has closed some of the investigations involving allegations made against President Cyril Ramaphosa and some ministers.

Mkhwebane was asked to probe a breach of the constitution, the executive ethics and violation of the code of ethical conduct and disclosure of members’ interests, among other things.
In a statement, Mkhwebane said her office applied the applicable laws to the facts and made conclusions.

“Throughout the various investigations, we sought to establish what happened, what should have happened and whether there was a discrepancy between the two and whether discrepancy, if any, constituted maladministration and improper conduct,” she said.

In a complaint by whistleblower Thabiso Zulu against President Ramaphosa, Mkhwebane said she concluded that she could not pursue the complaint made in April 2020
Mkhwebane said Zulu alleged that after the assassination attempt on his life in October 2019, Ramaphosa promised him he was to be taken to a place of safety and be provided with protection.

“Based on the complaint and analysis of the documentation received, the public protector has come to the conclusion that it would therefore be improper to pursue the matter further and make any pronouncement on the allegation that the president failed to uphold the constitution, based on an alleged promise he made to Mr Zulu as no evidence of such an undertaking could be established.”

She also said it was also unclear how Ramaphosa would constitute a failure to uphold the Constitution on his part.
Shivambu lodged a complaint in October 2020 and asked whether Munusamy’s appointment was made in terms of the Public Service Act and whether it was acceptable and rational for Mboweni to appoint Munusamy when she was implicated in the Zondo commission for receiving money from the state intelligence funds.

Mkhwebane said she concluded that the appointment of Munusamy was made in terms of the Public Service Act.

Regarding the complaint against former DA leader Mmusi Maimane, Mkhwebane said it did not fall within her jurisdiction because he resigned as an MP in October 2019.

Hindu Unity Movement leader Jayraj Bachu lodged a complaint in October 2019 after Maimane declared in the MPs’ register interest a property in Cape Town as his own though it belonged to a shelf company owned by a Durban businessman Wessel Jacobs.

She said the matter did not fall within her jurisdiction This is to say Mr Maimane was not performing a public function in any of the state departments nor administrative functions in the national, provincial and local spheres of government.

Actress Tumie Ngumla bags a role on 1Magic’s first-ever medical drama series Wounds

AWARD-WINNING actress Tumie Ngumla (35) has scored herself a big role.

She has joined 1Magic’s first-ever medical drama series called Wounds, as Refilwe Dube.

Speaking to SunBuzz, Tumie said she was over the moon when she got the call back for the role.

“But at the same time I was a bit intimidated as to how intricate it gets when you talk about a medical drama. There are terms that you can’t miss or improvise as they’re factually there,” she said.

She described Refilwe as someone who has many layers to her.

“But at the same time she’s the only one whose wound is very visible.

“Everyone else’s is hidden, but hers is for the whole world to see.”

Although she enjoyed the challenge of portraying Refilwe, she said it was emotionally taxing.

“It was quite daunting as there was not even a single day without having to do an emotional scene and I’m hoping that it shows on screen the effort that I have put into the role,” she said.

Tumie, who got her big break when she won the second season of the SABC1 reality competition Class Act in 2011, said people are going to love Refilwe’s vulnerability.

“She’s also strong-willed and I think that is what is going to make people love and relate to her,” she said.

Tumie said her next big mission is to break the cycle of being typecast. “I want to break out of my comfort zone and take on other roles to showcase my versatility,” she said.

Tune into Wounds on 1Magic (DStv channel 103) on Fridays at 9.30pm, starting on 8 October.
