Former Miss South Africa, Bokang Montjane-Tshabalala, shared her opinion about the ongoing debate around local reality TV shows that “make black people look stupid”. Since the success of TV channel, Moja Love, people have been debating the impact of reality TV shows featuring black people. The channel airs programmes about infidelity, maintenance struggles and conflict on shows like popular TV shows, Cheaters or Jerry Springer.
Despite the shows being a great hit with fans on social media, former Miss South Africa, Bokang weighed in on how the shows created for black people were “stupid” and “make us [black people] look pathetic”.
She tweeted while the charting show, Uyajola, was at the top of the trends list, and said people needed to understand the ulterior motive behind the content. “The shows created for our black people are so stupid and make us look so pathetic. I wish people understood how orchestrated all this is: to keep the black child a prisoner, to never broaden their horizon nor inspire them to be great at anything. Black child, wake up.

Bokang never mentioned Moja Love or Uyajola by name, but one celebrity did, that was TV and radio personality, Scoop Makhathini. Scoop shared his disapproval about how the black community was represented in a discussion on YouTube show, POPcast last month, with co-hosts, Ms Cosmo, DJ Speedsta and DJ Vigilante.
This all started with LoveBack and My Perfect Wedding, where people were seen coming out of helicopters with dust everywhere in Hammanskraal. We don’t need those kinds of thing. Now we have a channel called Moja Lobe, where everything has been taken a step lower. Instead of making content that builds the nation, it is dilapidating it.” But Moja Love hit back at the criticism in the past. The channel’s head of production, Bokani Moyo said the were just showing the reality of life in South Africa during a Metro FM interview in May.
