Ruth (Myrah Molokomme) from Skeem Saam speaks on her HIV role

Playing Ruth on Skeem Saam has been a blessing for actress Myrah Molokomme.

The 24-year-old, who plays a teenager living with HIV, said her journey on the SABC1 soapie has been amazing.

Ruth debuted as the girlfriend of Koloi, played by Tshepo Senatle, earlier last year and has since grown to be a big part of the show.

Speaking to SunBuzz, Myrah said she learnt a lot as an actress and as a person, thanks to Ruth.

“Playing Ruth is such an honour. To be chosen and trusted for such a character was important.

Myrah Molokomme

“It’s not only entertainment but I get to teach people and also learn a lot about HIV.

“For a 16-year-old who’s living with HIV, Ruth is firm, brave, and confident. She knows what she needs to do or say.

“She doesn’t let people or the stigma around the virus affect her.

“I admire how she stands up for herself and I’ve learnt a lot from her.”

The University of Limpopo performing arts graduate said she has always wanted to be a storyteller, and that’s why she studied acting.

“I’ve always been this overconfident girl who knew what she wanted to be.

“I knew I wanted to put myself out there and tell important stories,” said Myrah.

“And I wanted more for myself than just acting.

“I don’t just want to be an actress. I want to write, direct and do more. I recently graduated from university.”

At the moment her character, Ruth, is studying in Cape Town.

“While Ruth is in Cape Town, I am currently working behind the scenes as a script co-ordinator.

“However, I do hope Ruth will return soon because her role is important.

“I’d love to see her character develop and see what the future has in store for her,” she said.

“In the meantime, I’ve been exercising my acting muscles.

“I’ve been working on myself and enhancing my talent and skills.”

Limpopo man sentenced to life in jail for raping elderly woman

A Limpopo man was sentenced to life imprisonment for rape, robbery and housebreaking in the Mahwelereng Regional Court on Thursday.

Malose Lucky Mathiane, 29, from Ga-Madiba village, raped a 72-year-old woman in the Mahwelereng in January 2019.

Police said Mathiane, who was wearing a balaclava during the alleged incident, raped the elderly woman at about 4 am on January 27, 2019.

Limpopo police spokesperson Colonel Moatshe Ngoepe said Mathiane broke into the house, armed with a knife, and raped the woman.

Mathiane was sentenced to life imprisonment for housebreaking with intent to rape and rape, plus 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.

“These sentences follow an incident that occurred in the early hours of the 27th January 2019 at about 04:00 when a 72-year-old woman was attacked and raped by an intruder in her house at one of the villages in the Mahwelereng area.

“The accused, who was wearing a balaclava and gloves, broke into the house, threatened the victim with a knife and raped her. The vulnerable woman managed to fight back, injuring the perpetrator on the finger. The accused then fled the scene with the victim’s cellphone,” said Ngoepe.

He said the victim was helped by a neighbour and they immediately contacted the police, who handed over the case to the Mahwelereng Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit for further investigations.

“The accused was arrested after he was positively linked following a lengthy investigation and outstanding work by Detective Sergeant Lesetja Langa.

“The accused was kept in custody with no bail until he ultimately got sentenced,” said Ngoepe.

Limpopo provincial commissioner Lieutenant General Nneke Ledwaba, praised Langa for his dedication and hard work to secure the conviction.

“These sentences will serve as a deterrent to all those who continue to take advantage of innocent women, children, and vulnerable groups,” said Ledwaba.

Minister Mthethwa in Parliament: Cricket South Africa has no choice but to transform

Transformation within Cricket South Africa (CSA) will not be negotiated.

That’s the warning from Sports Minister Nathi Mthethwa, who has withdrawn his decision last week to deregister and defund CSA.

He’s told Parliament’s sports committee they’d run out of patience with people at governing body who wanted the status quo to continue.

Mthethwa slammed Cricket South Africa for obstructing calls for change.

He said they spent millions on the Nicholson report, which called for the establishment of a majority independent board, and its recommendations must be implemented.

The minister said going forward CSA would have no choice but to transform.

“The changes which we’ve said, we made it very clear from the beginning that we will not negotiate – we do not negotiate transformation. It must be implemented.”

CSA Interim board chairperson Stavros Nicolaou said South African cricket had suffered reputational damage as a result of the fallout.

“Indeed cricket has been subject to reputation damage for many years and the best and simplest way to restore the reputation is by ensuring that you have governance that is of an appropriate and acceptable global and domestic standard.”

He said a new board with mostly independent directors would be elected soon.

Ramaphosa leads condolences after Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu’s death

Tributes continue to pour in following the passing of Queen Mantfombi Dlamini Zulu on Thursday.

Queen Dlamini Zulu was appointed regent after the death of her husband King Goodwill Zwelithini last month.

The Nelson Mandela Foundation’s Sello Hatang said they were shocked by the queen’s passing.

“We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the royal family, the nation of AmaZulu, and the people of Eswatini. May her soul rest in power and peace.”

We have no application from Mahumapelo & Lenkopane to appeal suspension, says NW ANC

The ANC North West’s disciplinary committee said it has not received an application to appeal the decision to suspend the membership of former Premier Supra Mahumapelo and Women’s League leader Bitsa Lenkopane.

Mahumapelo and Lenkopane were suspended from the organisation this week after they were found guilty of misconduct – and suspended for five years.

Reports said Mahumapelo had approached the national body to appeal and bypassed the provincial body.

The pair were accused of running a parallel event during the campaign for by-elections in some municipalities last year.

Earlier reports said that they had been seeking to appeal the decision, but the office of the provincial party coordinator Hlomane Chauke said they hadn’t received an application.

In a letter written to secretary-general Ace Magashule – which Eyewitness News has seen – Hloma said they found it strange that Magashule did not copy North West structures when the national body was approached.

He said it was strange that Magashule misinterpreted some of the rules of the party.

Joburg commuters may be affected as Monday Metrobus strike looms

Metrobus has announced its operations will be disrupted next week following a planned strike by its drivers.

Members affiliated to labour union Demawusa will not report for work on Monday citing a number of grievances, including those dealing with wages.

Metrobus management said it would ensure that the impact of the planned industrial action was kept to a minimum as thousands of Johannesburg commuters were expected to be affected.

Spokesperson Goodwill Shiburi said the situation would be closely monitored.

“I do want to make all our commuters aware that some of major routes may be affected and impacted negatively, but the employer is ensuring that we are able to operate on Monday using the members of the other unions that are not on strike.”

State Security Agency mum on alleged exploitation of Eugene De Kock’s state-employed caregiver

On Thursday UDM leader Bantu Holomisa released a letter addressed to State Security Agency (SSA) Minister Ayanda Dlodlo about the alleged exploitation of a caregiver reportedly hired by the agency to look after apartheid doctor and torturer Eugene de Kock.

SSA spokesperson Mava Scott confirmed receiving the letter but said the department would not be commenting further.

When The Citizen asked if the department was aware of Holomisa’s claims, Scott insisted there would be no further comments.

“We are looking into the matter internally, I cannot say anything further than that,” Scott said.

Scott said there was no need for Holomisa to release the letter intended for the minister to the public.

“The letter was addressed to the minister and not the public.”

In his low-key comments, Holomisa asks about claims the caregiver for De Kock has not been paid for nearly two years.

It is clear from the testimony at the Zondo commission that Mr. De Kock lived the life of a king during operation lock, but that he continues to do so, with a live-in-servant, in the name of Ms—-, who is this apartheid’s monster’s beck and call.

Holomisa said the woman whose name is redacted in the letter was an employee of Life GroenKloof Hospital in Pretoria before she was hired to look after De Kock.

“Her job description is to ensure that De Kock regularly takes his medication and also to do housework such as cooking and cleaning,” reads the letter.

He further claims the minister was made aware of the situation at some point and intervened but later turned her back on the woman.

“One might wonder why Ms —- has stayed so long in her job, but given that Eugene de Kock and the SSA are her so-called employees, one might understand her reluctance to rock the proverbial boat, she is dealing with the SSA after all and might just be plainly scared of some sort of reprisal,” reads the letter.

Holomisa has since challenged the minister to intervene in ensuring the woman is fully compensated for the “19 months that she is owed” a salary.

Motorists given lifeline for licence renewals to 31 August

Motorists whose vehicle licence discs, driver’s licences, temporary permits and roadworthy certificates are expired have been given a lifeline until 31 August for renewals.

This was announced by Minister of Transport Fikile Mbalula on Friday during a Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) press briefing.

“We extended the validity of vehicle licence discs, temporary permits and roadworthy certificates which expired during the period that commenced from 26 March 2020 up to 31 May 2020 for a period that ended on 31 August 2020,” Mbalula said.

“All learners licences, driving licence cards, temporary driving licence cards and professional driving permits that expired from 26 March 2020 to 31 December 2020 are deemed valid for a grace period ending 31 August 2021.”

Addressing the backlog in Gauteng

Gauteng had experienced a significant backlog in driver’s licence renewals since last year, RTMC CEO Makhosini Msibi said.

Mbalula said that there were about 7.1 million vehicles due for renewal between March 2020 and January 2021.

“Of these 6.3 million have been renewed. Out of the 900,000 discs that have yet to be renewed, 250,000 are in Gauteng,” said Mbalula.

“If you look at Gauteng compared to all other provinces, if we can deal with Gauteng the backlog throughout the country is far less.

“If you then take in terms of Gauteng, you will realise that Gauteng is sitting at 38% so there is a backlog of 62% which we are supposed to be dealing with in terms of the Gauteng scenario.”

Mbalula said that there were serious concerns about the difficulties experienced by citizens in booking slots through online platforms.

“We are gravely concerned that preliminary investigations suggest corruption is the principal driver of lack of availability of booking slots in various licensing centres across Gauteng. Learner and driver licensing remain a pervasive challenge, particularly in Gauteng,” Mbalula said.

Mango airline begins operations as SAA exits business rescue

In a week of will they or won’t they survive turbulence, low-cost airline Mango has been given another lease on life.

In first a WhatsApp message, followed shortly thereafter by a media release, the airline confirmed that it would continue domestic operations from Saturday and beyond. Presently this excludes flights to Zanzibar.

This message arrived a few hours after the South African Airways (SAA) business rescue practitioners (BRPs) exited. The Citizen had reported on Friday morning that this was the most likely outcome in efforts to save the airline.

The week preceding what is likely a collective sigh of relief by Mango ticket holders and staff, was a rough and tumble of cancelled flights, delays, laagers of silence and closed-door negotiations. The outcome, for now, is that the airline lives to fly another day.

The end to SAA’s business rescue process was announced as the practitioners filed a notice of substantial implementation with the Companies and Intellectual Property Commission (CIPC), following a process which started on 5 December 2019.

The business rescue plan was approved by creditors on 24 July 2020, and the airline has to date received nearly R8 billion of the R10.3 billion required for its implementation from the government.

In their statement, the BRPs said a “significant portion of the debt that hamstrung SAA has since been compromised and the balance thereof transferred to a receivership, a vehicle specifically intended to ensure the debt is paid over the next three years”.

Nhlanhla Mafu of Mafikizolo hijacked

Nhlanhla Mafu from the popular Mafikizolo duo has come out unscathed following a traumatic hijacking experience. The musician announced on her Instagram stories that her car got taken away but she thanks God for keeping her safe.

I just got hijacked guys. But I thank the Lord that I am fine. My car is gone but I thank God for life,” she proclaimed.

Nhlanhla Mafu of Mafikizolo hijacked

This experience comes a week after she opened up about her most tragic loss. In a now-deleted lengthy emotional post on her Instagram, Nhlanhla opened up about her divorce and the passing of her daughter Zinathi. The open love letter was directed at her son Luvuyo.

“In 2009 when the heavens gained your sister Zinathi I thought it was the end of me, the pain and the hurt was so deep, so intense and so unbearable, I never thought I’d be able to survive another day. But when my Heavenly Father saw my pain He sent me you Luvuyo, my Joy and I can safely say that the best and the happiest time of my life was when I was pregnant with you.

“I just could not wait to meet you, to hold you in my arms and kiss you. And when you finally came, I could not stop looking at you, you were so perfect, my perfect gift from God. You healed my heart and I could smile and laugh again, you brought sunshine and so much joy back into my life and for that, I’m forever thankful for you.”

“You came to my rescue again in 2019 when your dad and I got divorced, once again you saved my life. One of the worst years of my life. I was in such a dark place, so broken, so depressed, and in so much pain that at times it felt too much to bear. And you my son, just a thought of you or a look at your face brought back a little glimpse of light back into my life, and I hung on to that little spark of light with my dear life. And just like that, you brought me back to life. You gave me a reason to fight, to get back on my feet, and to never give up.”

“Luvuyo my little brave gift from God, you my baby are my sunshine, my joy, and my happy place. You are the reason I wake up every and strive to be a better person than I was, the reason I want to do good, and the reason I’m excited about the future. You my son are the reason I’m alive.

“You saved my life not once but twice already in your young life and because of you, no one can ever stand before me and question God’s love for me. You literally breathed life back into my body and I will never forget that for as long as I live. I want you to know that you are not only my son but you are my hero too. I owe the fact that I’m out here and living my best life to you, so,…” she concluded.

Government considering new lockdown rules for South Africa ahead of third wave

The resurgence of the Covid-19 pandemic in India has prompted the South African government to consider introducing additional measures in order to stave off the third wave.

Health Minister Zweli Mkhize told an online conference that a close eye was being kept on India, which has now the highest Covid-19 infection rate in the world.

“The challenges we have seen in India are very serious,” Mkhize said. “We have received an advisory from the ministerial advisory council that we have to consider some restrictions and we are now going through that,” he said, without giving details.

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa eased coronavirus restrictions in March as the rate of new infections dropped, scrapping most limits on alcohol sales, shortening a night-time curfew and permitting larger public gatherings.

Covid-19 infections in Africa’s most-industrialized economy have fallen from about 22,000 a day in January to fewer than 1,000, even without a large-scale vaccination campaign.

The chart below, courtesy of Media Hack, shows the daily confirmed cases in South Africa since March 2020.

100s of foreign nationals expected to vacate Cape Town facilities today

Friday is D-Day for a group of protesting refugees to vacate from two sites in Cape Town.

Hundreds of foreign nationals have for a year been accommodated temporarily in tents in Bellville and Wingfield.

They had participated in a sit-in outside the UN Refugee Agency in October 2019 but found refuge in a church off Green Market Square.

More than a week ago, Home Affairs Minister Aaron Motsoaledi said that the protesting foreigners needed to decide either to repatriate or reintegrate into communities.

And while some indicated they would take the option of going back to their countries of origin, others decided to resettle.

However, some said that they were not taking either option, but on Friday the tents were to be taken down.

Director-General at Department of Home Affairs Tommy Makhode said: “There will be no shelter, and there will be no ablution facilities.”

He said that no one would be going to a third country, specifically Canada.

“They were being misled to believe that government could operate as a transport agency or a tourist agency to transport people to destinations that they desired.”

He said that over R1 million had been spent on the refugees so far, and that didn’t include the costs incurred by the City of Cape Town.

EFF calls for suspension of Saldanha Bay Mayor Marius Koen over his qualifications

The Economic Freedom Fighters (EFF) in the Western Cape has on Thursday called for the immediate suspension of Saldanha Bay Municipality Mayor Marius Koen for allegedly lying about his qualifications.

According to the party, Koen claims to hold an Honours degree in Public Administration and Industrial Psychology and Masters in Business Administration.

But, the EFF said so far, had not been able to provide evidence of these qualifications.

The EFF’s Wandile Kasibe said a few weeks back, the DA immediately suspended MEC Bonginkosi Madikizela for lying about his qualifications but not Koen.

“As much as we welcome Madikizela’s resignation, we also call on the resignation of the Mayor of Saldanha Marius Koen, who is alleged to have also lied about his qualifications. We are not surprised by the double standards and anti-black racist position that the DA has taken where it treats black leaders differently from how they treat their white counterparts.”

“The issue is that we’ve currently asked the University for the qualification and the issue is under investigation,” said the DA’s federal council chairperson Helen Zille.

Koen is yet to respond to the allegations.
